My lost childhood

Well, my childhood can't actually be lost, but the place I spent it in is gone. My father was in the US Coast Guard and we moved every two years from when I was eleven until I graduated from high school. But for the first eleven years of my life, we lived in a small subdivision in Portsmouth, Virginia on the eastern coast of the US. I have such good memories of playing in the neighborhood with the other kids. There was an empty corner lot next to our house where we all played tag and Red Rover, caught lightening bugs (fire flies) in jars, and stayed out until mothers called us in for supper. There was a small woods behind our house where we played for hours. I found out last week that all those houses are gone now. I know it can't take away my memories, but it's still sad. Do you ever get to go back to where you grew up?

I am still living in my city where I grew up. The only difference is that I can not go back to my old house, where I had so many childhood memories.

@1creekgirl We left the old house because of an inheritance issue. Last year, my family and I ended the familial relationship with the relatives.

@Shavkat I'm sorry to hear that. Money has probably caused more trouble in families than anything else. It happened in mine, too.

It's sad when the house where we had happy memories is no longer there.

Where I "grew up" is always a bit of a question mark, being a military brat as well (my dad was in the navy). But I do visit some of the places I remember. Our duplex in Green Bay. The house we lived in in Holiday Shores. And I know our house in San Diego is still there. Fun to look back.

So you know what it's like to always be the new kid in school. Not fun for a shy girl.

@porwest I never really learned how to make friends and it's still hard for me, although I'm not as shy as I used to be.

@1creekgirl That was the worst part of being a navy brat. I don't think I ever got used to it, and I think it's why I am not very social in my personal life these days.

I did once, about a year or two after I moved here. Once for a graduation and again for a wedding. With how toxic my family is, my husband and I have no plans to return anytime soon.

@1creekgirl It's okay. Better that I made a clean break. I'm happier and living my best life.

What a beautiful photo, you were such a pretty girl. Yes, O go back time by time to where I grew up. The city has grown up a lot (TOO MUCH), but the place where I was born has not changed a lot, it is an historic area of Milan, a few steps from the Duomo of Milan, and still unchanged.

I have visited a few places where I grew up and couple of others where I had worked forty years ago. I love to retrace the steps and meet some ex colleagues. I find it so fulfilling.

It's hard to see our childhood landmarks disappear. I went to where I grew up about three or four years ago. It is about 50 minutes away, but I went to jog memories of my mother. I ended up in tears, AND I got lost on my way home. What a day it was!

What a pretty child you were. It's disappointing when our childhood haunts disappear.

When I retired I moved back to near where I grew up. I have very fond memories of those years also.

That would be sad to think that all the houses have now gone. Our farm has changed beyond recognition too.

you are such a cute kid here. Yes, I always reminisce my childhood. It was a happy one. We lived on a farm and my siblings, cousins and I would play around.

I haven't been to my old neighborhood in decades. I'm sure there would be a flood of memories.
