Does anyone remember getting colored chicks at Easter?

When I was a kid I remember besides getting the Easter Baskets filled with candy and goodies, I also got a lot of live baby chicks that were dyed different colors. I think I got about 6 of them and they came in a nice size cage that was outside. I would bring them in the house sometimes. I also got a few white rabbits. Did anyone here ever get them or knew of them?

I remember them, it is forbidden now, it is considered animal abuse.

@ramapo17 I love animals, but some people are so careless. I am taking care of a cat that a family left behind because they moved from a home into an apartment. Poor kitty, he is so sweet.

Absolutely. Some people are crazy and always wanting to do nasty things to people or animals. I recently adopted my grandsons cockatiel and we are having so much fun with him. Being retired, we have all the time to play with him and keep him company. I have learned more about these little critters from the internet. They are amazing. I had parakeets when I was a young teenager and loved them/.

Me to. I can't even think of who would have started that.

I remember them. I think they stopped because dying the poor babies was considered cruelty to animals.

You are so right. People come up with things they think are cute but don't think if it is safe or not for the poor little things. I got a white rabbit then to but that wasn't dyed.

@ramapo17 They are only a day old when they are shipped out to the hardware stores. I'm glad they quit that little gimmick.

Easter egg hunt was not a tradition where I’m from. So never really recalled such. But i saw those colored chicks on Instagram every Easter.

@toniganzon That is interesting. I love learning about how different countries have different traditions, etc.

I never got live chicks or rabbits for Easter, but I did always get different colored Peeps for Easter. Does that count? lol

@ramapo17 I'm doing okay. I got Covid again, almost a year after I had it the first time. I've been sick for the last 3 weeks, and still can't shake this nasty cough.

@ramapo17 Today marks exactly one month since I got Covid, and I'm still dealing with the after-effects of the virus, especially with my breathing. It's definitely been a struggle. I just can't wait for that day when I feel 100% healthy again.

Yeah, weren't those things called Peeps? I just remember they were godawful. Never could eat them. Give me chocolate and put those Peeps where they belong... In the garbage can.

@porwest I liked them but I always had a very sweet tooth. I think enough of them would send me to the dentist.

@ramapo17 When I was a kid I had a HUGE sweet tooth, but these were usually, unfortunately, tossed into the garbage can. lol

@ramapo17 Yeah, that's what I think Peeps were. I found them inedible. lol

The only colorful chicks that I ever got in my Easter baskets were plastic toys, thankfully. I wouldn't be surprised if our bunny was somebody's Easter bunny at one point. Nobody ever bothered coming forward when I posted about finding her in the park back in November. It's unfortunately really common for them to be dumped when they're not little and cute anymore.

Aww, that is so sad. I could never kill an animal or eat one either. I use to drive my parents crazy as I wouldn't eat any animals. I think they had to trick me into eating any meats etc.

What did you do with the coloured baby chicks? Did they grow up into coloured hens and cocks or were they killed after Easter?

We never killed them. We gave them to a neighbor that had all kinds of animals and none for eating. They had some big properties and had all kinds of animals.

@ramapo17 Did the colour remain for long? I guess the coloured feathers fell out after some time and the new feathers were the natural yellow.

@MALUSE I don't remember as I was about 6 plus years old. I am almost 80 now so I am surprised I remember as much as I do.

Maybe because I grew up in Philadelphia, getting a live animal at Easter wasn't a thing in my childhood. I hope that they don't dye chicks anymore.

No they don't do it any more, at least I don't think so and haven't heard of any. People come up with such weird and bad things to do to animals.
