This is a popular children`s book that was first written in the early 1950s. I managed to get a later edition from a charity shop some time ago ,and yesterday, I decided to read it. This is the first time that I have read this book because until a few years ago I did not even know it existed
Several years ago I became interested in collecting children`s books and I started looking out for first editions of certain books because these first editions can be worth a lot of money. I read in one of my collectors magazines about a book called Charlottes Web so I started to look out for it. Unfortunately the copy I own is not a first edition because it was printed much later than the original.
However, I did enjoy reading it because it is a lovely story about a pig who makes friends with a spider. On first seeing the book cover, I thought that Charlotte was the little girl but I was wrong .The little girl is called Fern and she was the first character in the book to save the pig, Wilbur, from death when he was first born.

Our students read that book in third grade, around 9 years old. There is a certain type of garden spider that spins a unique web. Some people call it a writing spider. I have also heard of it being called a Charlotte spider. Its web has a kind of ladder across it that people say looks like a line of writing.

I did not know about this spider I thought it was something the author had made up for the story. I imagine this would be an educational book for children because it teaches them about farm life.

@marlina While I was reading this book and the `web' was mentioned, it put me in mind of the internet because we now refer to that as `the web'.

I like the cover. Kids these days don't get to play with farm animals anymore. They only see them virtually on their tablets or phones.

I liked the cover too, it is very eye catching. It is good for children to interact with animals but not many get the chance to these days. Apart from family pets, but pets are different to farm animals.

@moshishibie This is true , but I prefer to read real books still. Reading too much electronically would give me a headache.

@much2say Yes, this book would have taught children a bit about farmyard animals and spiders.

@lazydaizee At that time, I always wanted to grow up, and when I grow up, I still want to study the simplicity of my childhood. People always live in contradiction.

@moshishibie This is very true because when we are young, we wish we were older so that we can do more. But then when we have the responsibilities of adult life, we wish we could be young and carefree again.

@marlina I think that looking at the illustrations is as much fun as reading the story.

I already have a few children`s books in my collection and I am always looking out for more. I particularly like collecting old children`s books because I enjoy the stories and I like looking at the illustrations.

@ladyhero The story was written in 1952 and I expect many people who were born in that year will have read the book sometime in their childhood. You have made a good suggestion about sharing this story on other sites but unfortunately I do not use youtube .

@lazydaizee cool, if you've read it, you can retell it on youtube with the theme of an old story, or if there is a stage show you can tell it too, it will be interesting nostalgia for those who were born in the same year when the story was written

I personally like the stories, rather than the books. Nevertheless, holding the books, feeling the papers, thinking who was the writer, who draw the drawings, and where they got the inspiration from, what their life were like...What moral did the writer try to teach :-)
I like reading stories to my nephews. They are all young 3 to 6 years old. They like listening and I make sound effects too. I change my voice to make the story sound more dramatic, each character with a voice of its own. :-)
We stop and check the drawings, see what happens in them.

It is good that you read stories to your nephews. The sound effects will make the story even more enjoyable for them.

@lazydaizee That's very true - about the sugar coating.

I think some of it would have to be done with care because it mentions animals dying and people are sensitive to this sort of subject these days. Maybe this was not the case when the book was written. We do tend to `sugar coat' some subjects these days.

I would not describe it as a fairy tale , but it is a sweet little children`s book.
