I put food coloring in my hair

Not really. But I bought some purple color that will wash out when I wash my hair next. I'm thinking of having my beautician put several pastel colors into my hair when I get my next cut so I thought I'd try this out first.
I won't be able to share a pic just yet as I put it on the sides. I may put some in my bangs next and if I do I can take a pic of that.
At work we didn't used to have the option of using fun colors in our hair but things have changed over the years.
Has anyone else used fun colors in their hair before and if so what colors?

@MarshaMusselman since I have black hair, it is impossible to do that unless I bleach my hair first which I do not like to do so I usually settle with lightening my dark hair

If I get it done with my haircut I'll be sure to share more about it then. A lot depends on what color you're natural hair is. Some colors don't work well or they change as the hair grows out.

@rakski the package I'm using shows a strip of purple in a braid for someone with dark hair but the product may not be available where you live yet.

I've never done highlights and I think that's too late for me with the grey hair but I could be wrong.

@nela13 I'm not familiar with champo. The grey is natural if that's what you mean.

@MarshaMusselman you can try to enhance the Grey color, it looks beautiful. Do you use a violet champô to prevent it from being yellow?

@MarshaMusselman I know that my husband would hate to see splashes of colors on my hair, this is something I will never do.

@LadyDuck my husband doesn't mind. Actually he didn't even notice but I will ask before I use the permanent type.

My whole head won't be pink or purple just splashes of color on a few places. I may never do it again but I'm going to do it at least once I think.

@MarshaMusselman Acetate stands tied into hair. Hard to see, but I had silver and gold strands but in.

I can see your in green and gold is there were those colors, lol. The dark purple isn't very noticable. When I used a little on the sides no one said anything. When I used a little on my bangs a manager commented and one other person. But it almost looks black and like my normal hair where it's not yet grey.
Maybe I'll try a bit more over all color tomorrow.

@just4him it's the wash out kind but I think it's too dark for my color of grey. If I go with the pastels I'm thinking that should be more noticable.

@MarshaMusselman I told my daughter once she's 18 she can dye it how she wants. I don't like all the chemicals so I won't let her do permanent dye.

@shaggin That's understandable and will give her something to look forward to.

My daughter dyed here's a lot once she was in high school and older. She still dyes it too. It's naturally brown. Recently it was blonde and Matt weekend she went back to auburn. I liked the blond better, but it's her hair and she's old enough and married to make her own decisions on that.

It said to put a towel over the shoulders but that it wouldn't stain the hands. After the first use I no longer use the towel but I also don't put it on the back.
I took a picture but didn't use enough to see it well enough. Plus the dark purple doesn't show that well.

I've never used fun colors for my hair before.
But starting in a few years from now, I will have to start using hair color, as by then my hair will be really turning gray.

I think people that let their hair turn grey often look younger than they do if coloring it.

@MarshaMusselman I do it myself when I have the time but now that its pandemic and I usually stay at home most of the time, I do not dye my hair anymore...at least not yet.

@cherigucchi so you've dyed your hair a normal hair color just not the pastel colors yet? Is that what you meant when you said you haven't tried any of those things before?

Are pastel colors available for hair coloring there? I was in my thirties before I ever colored my hair and quit when more of my hair started turning grey. My daughter colored her hair every year while she was young. Now she gets it done professionally instead.
Not everyone does it though. Don't feel compelled.

@jaboUK I could see auburn when I saw my mirror image in the sun so when I was young meaning around thirty I put auburn coloring in my hair a few times.

I bet your purple looks cute. I've gotten used to seeing all sorts of hair colors these days but not brave enough to try it myself.

The purple blends in to much it seems. I'm going to try covering a bit more today but I don't want my whole head purple. I think the pastels will show up much better in my hair.

If I've seen the results of it I've not known that's what they used.
I saw someone with grey to show hair and they had splashes of light purple, pink and another color I think and it looked so good that I decided to give it a shot too.

My daughter put Kool-Aid in her hair to color it once. We were told it would wash out. Maybe she did something wrong, it lasted for weeks and we finally had to take her to a salon and have it removed to be back to normal.

If this lasted for weeks I wouldn't mind. If it changes colors I might not like it as much. I'll still try it once though while it's in style among the older women here.

I am one of those boring people who don't want to do that, although I think it is nice on some people. Also, I am unfortunately allergic to a lot of chemicals, and many dyes are on that list. So, I just sit back and enjoy everyone else's instead.

No, I haven't. I don't think it's a smart idea to put chemicals in your hair that don't belong there. My hair's gotten darker as I've gotten older, to the point my husband thinks it's black when it's just a really rich dark brown.

The wash out type or longer lasting ones? Are you talking about fun colors or both?
Back before my hair was grey I used different shades of auburn but that was twenty years ago.

I've not colored my hair for years in the traditional way. We will see if anyone even notices and how well or does wash out when I'm ready.
