Kangaroo hide export to the USA is to be stopped

Sometimes I’m asked if kangaroos have any use. Many are killed for pet food. There is a limited market for human consumption except perhaps in outback areas where people consume kangaroo meat as part of their normal diet. In addition, just a few days ago, I read that kangaroo hides are exported to America to Nike and Adidas companies where they are used for the making of shoes. However, that will all stop soon as animal activists have managed to persuade these companies that they should use something else. While it’s pretty sad that kangaroo are shot to provide these companies with leather, closure of such markets will not stop the killing as kangaroo numbers have increased to the point where culling is necessary. Photo is of ‘our’ roos.

If the poor roos are killed anyway because there are too many, their skin could be sued to make shoes, that are surely a lot healthier than shoes made with plastic or fake materials.

@JudyEv This is my opinion, even if I feel sad to know that animals are killed because they are too many... also humans are too many. Well, I hope that with the virus they are not trying to do just that.

I think so too. It's different to just shoot them for the leather but if they are going to be shot anyway, then best surely to make good use of whatever can be used.

@LadyDuck It's not really funny but perhaps there is a human 'cull' going on!

@RebeccasFarm Our eldest collected Nikes for a while. When we visit, he almost forces us to buy a pair - which we do just to please him. lol One year he had two pair for me that he had got off Ebay, we bought a pair each and he gave Vince two pair that were the wrong size for him but which fitted Vince. So we came home with another six pairs of sneakers! I haven't had to buy any since that visit which was some years ago.

Well, it sounds like regardless of whether they are used in shoes or not. Not all of them can be contained there. So, it is kind of a moot point it seems whether Nike uses them in shoes or not since some have to be culled anyway apparently.

That's exactly my opinion. Why shoot them and leave them to rot? But you can't argue with animal activists.

@JudyEv Horses used to be here. Then people complained and they tried to make the foods from grain. That causes problems as dogs and cats are not vegetarians at all. Some brands are now using different meats again. Of course abandoned and mistreated horses went up when they did that.

@wolfgirl569 It is just pie in the sky to think that all animals can just go on living whatever their circumstances.

@judyev Culling is a horrible concept but I get it. Such a pity humans have disrupted the natural order of things and thrown the world out of kilter.

Since I was a child, my mother taught me that we kill animals, only if we are going to eat them. Of course now as an adult, I understand that there are other reasons that justify their being killed, such as overpopulation or dangerous diseases, but what I do not accept is that it is done for commercial purposes, it does not fit in my head.

Maybe, if they have to be killed, it is better not to waste the meat/pelt/whatever. But I understand what you're saying.

We have some animals here that have turned into plagues. The only difference with kangaroos is that they are not native. Men brought boars, visons and other animals with winderful skins for their furs years ago. They did not earn what they wished so they set them free. Now they are destroying our native forests. They should be killed and their furs and meat should be used.

It is rarely a good thing when a non-native animal is introduced into an environment and allowed to run wild.

NZ is also moving to stop the export of live animals (mostly cattle). This has probably been triggered by the sinking of a cargo boat last year carrying 6,000 cattle which perished along with the 42 crew of the ship. Lawmakers are coming up with the ban because of the ordeal the animals might have been suffering while on long journey at sea plus the fact that they will be in a strange environment they are not used to when they arrive at their destination.

We export live cattle and sheep too and there is a great deal of argument back and forth about it. I think conditions have improved somewhat now.

@sunrisefan I think mostly they are treated badly once they get to Indonesia. It would be best if they could be slaughtered in Australia and then the meat shipped.

@JudyEv I think advocates of animal welfare are the ones strongly pushing for it. If you think about, the animal are indeed pitiful having to endure the long journey. We would not be sure how they will be treated at their destination whereas here in NZ, they are very well cared for and have wide tracks of grazing land.
