Pecan Trees and Wisteria

Remember last year when I potted all the baby pecan trees and wisteria? Well I thought I lost them all over the winter with the hard freeze that lasted almost a week here in the south. I left them alone and just kept my fingers crossed that they would leaf out. And I am so glad that I did! This one is fuller than most, as most of them are just now showing a sign of green. I'm glad they survived. I'm sure some did not but most of them did! Photo Credit: © 2021 Karen Gros, All rights reserved

You are lucky! Mother Nature works in wonderful ways. We have a huge wisteria tree that we ignore. Lol!

We have several old vines that wind up several of the trees here. I finally got the man to quit cutting the vines down around the pecan trees. It's a beautiful sight when we have a good year of blooms. We also had them planted all around the historic location of the outhouse where he was mowing. I have that area off limits to his mower now too.

@DianneN They were pretty when in bloom. I should have snapped a photo but didn't. It's just a big mound of purple flowers!

I am so glad they survived. I thought I had lost my young fig tree, but I noticed today that it's full of leaves.

@LadyDuck I agree! I am hoping that the magnolia tree I planted last Fall survives all this wetness. So far it is looking good.

@kareng It is sad to see a young tree die. The tree had the first three figs last year, I hope to see more this year.

That's great that the majority survived! I love pecans, and would love to plant a pecan tree in my yard, but I am actually allergic to pecan trees. Which is weird, because I'm not allergic to the nuts. And I never realized it until I found out I am allergic to them, but there are pecan trees and groves all over north Florida where I live.

That's crazy, but I understand. One of my daughters is allergice to alow vera. That is another mystery. Her identical twin is not.

@moffittjc Right! I was very surprised that she was allergic but she swells up something awful.

@kareng I'd be in trouble if I was allergic to aloe vera. I have aloe plants all over my yard, and I use it frequently to rub on my skin, especially being out in the sun a lot here in Florida.

I'm glad to hear that. I almost lost my favorite jade plant in a hard freeze several years ago. But it survived as well.

@DocAndersen Yes, I will be having a day playing out in the dirt/soil soon. My old boss at Wetland Biogeochemistry didn't like the word "dirt" and insisted we all use the term soil. It just sounds better playing in the dirt vs. soil. Ha!

Terrific! You'll have pecans soon then? Or are they like macadamia nuts that takes a few yet to grow nuts?

It takes about 12 years for them to mature if I remember correctly. I have about 6 old pecan trees. It is hit or miss with if they make with all the crazy weather here.
