Making something from nothing

Do you like the horse in the photo? We saw it on a gate at the farm where we took our pet sheep. The lady of the house has been having welding lessons and this is the result. I think it is really good. We’ve come across similar in quite a few places in Western Australia when we’ve been travelling around. Where you or I might just see a cog or a saw-blade, those with a creative streak see an opportunity to create something beautiful. Are you one of those who can create something out of very little?

It looks very well done although I'd probably paint it to keep it from rusting. I can make things if someone else points out that I have the stuff to make it but coming up with the idea, not really. The most creative thing I can remember making was a bamboo screen to block the sun off our front deck at the other house. Edit to add: I wonder what her husband said when all his wrenches went missing?

I think the rusted appearance gives this sort of thing charm and character actually.

@porwest You might be right. But if I made it, I wouldn't like seeing the rust taking my hard work away.

I have to agree with @porwest that the rusted appearance suits it in this instance. We can come up with innovative ideas for practical items and solutions but not for decorative things.

I’m not at all creative when it comes to making things. Your horse is amazing!

It's not her horse. It belongs to her friend. Unless you mean in the sense that she took the photo and the photo belongs to her... Hmm... Yes, that would work, too. BTW, I think I forgot to welcome you to myLot yesterday. Welcome! I hope you enjoy the site and make lots of online friends here!

I'm not very creative either. It isn't my horse, not that it matters. It was on the farm where we took the sheep.

It looks simple enough but I can never see anything when it's all just bits and pieces on the ground.

I see things like this from time to time in my frequent travels, and so long as they are in the right places (such as this one appears to be), they are actually quite unique and interesting to look at. There are some very creative people out there.

@allen0187 They originally had it on their gate but were concerned that it might get stolen.

That is so realistic. Often similar sculptures here in NZ are of cows or sheep.

They do some nice ones here of sheep and make them out of corrugated iron.

Funnily enough I did think about learning to weld just so I could try my hand at this sort of thing. But on the whole I suspect I'm not that imaginative! I love this one!

@JudyEv Maybe we should give it a go - after all you never know until you try! And I do have a lot of old nuts and bolts, obsolete sizes of spanners etc hanging around!

It would all be a heap of junk to me too. I could copy something and perhaps embellish it a bit but I'm not good starting from scratch.

That's a really great horse. Very creative. No, I'm not very creative. I can do needlework and that sort of thing, but nothing like painting or sculpture.

I am better at restoring things to their original state. I am battling entropy on many levels. My friend and I DO go hiking to a place where there there is an incredible amount of "junk art." It's an ever-changing place to go.
