On the second day of my recent short holiday I went on a guided tour to Ulva Island, a small island accessible by boat from Stewart Island. I'd heard this was a not-to-be-missed trip I must make while on Stewart Island, and now I give the same advice to others. I have trouble finding the words to do it justice.
The small ferry took about an hour to reach the island. We were taken into many small bays along the way and our guide Annie explained the history and significance of each. We passed small fishing vessels and birds such as the Royal Albatross and oyster catchers flew close to our boat.
I was pleased to have chosen to pay a bit extra to do a guided tour. Ulva Island is protected and predator free ad ever so beautiful. Annie identified and talked about native plants and trees in the lush forest and the history of the places of interest we visited.
On the island we saw many NZ native birds up close, many of which can not be freely seen in other parts of the country.
The walk through the forest was peaceful and energising and Annie's talk to our small group added to the experience.
There are more photos I will hopefully share in future posts. The photo above is of our guide Annie.

You must have had such a wonderful experience. I always enjoy guided nature tours, especially when I visit new places.
