This is what they did

In this image is an old swather. A piece of equipment used to cut hay and other grasses.
It is in the old football field across the street from me.
The grass has grown all year and a local family comes in and cuts it in June most years. It will be made into those big round bales. They use the bales to feed some cattle, I believe. It is just a small, private operation.
In the foreground is my wheel barrow that has lemongrass, red basil and thyme in it.
Very much a summer picture. There are other planters on the ground with other herbs and such.

My house is on four city lots. When there was a school here, the area across the street was the Football field. I am kind of on the outskirts of a very small town. I see lovely cloudscapes often.

@GardenGerty I don't know how big a city lot is - but 4 must be pretty sizable! Oh yah, the cloudscapes must be beautiful . . . looks like you can see a real horizon there too!

It has asparagus fern in it. I have not done much out there this year. So many people I know keep chickens.

@GardenGerty Nice! Yes, chickens are addictive! You get some and then want more! I started incubating eggs this year. I'm sure you saw pictures of that first batch of eggs.

I like to think so. I need to go harvest some red basil.

@GardenGerty How different is red basil from the green in taste? I've never heard of red basil until recently. The regular green stuff gives me indigestion.

@BarBaraPrz Red tastes a little like anise or licorice. I have grown many types of basil. Wish I could find lemon basil again.

Yes, lots of openness. Often I see wildlife over there, and even in my yard.

I never knew that was called a swather! I always think those round bales look neat. Definitely a nostalgic image from my childhood.

They have gone so much to the big round bales now. When we bought our house it was a duplex and one of the kids from the family was renting one half. He parked the swather next door at the vacant house. I would not have known to call it a swather but that is what he called it.

Looks like your herbs are doing very nicely. Back in Latvia if one does not have modern equipment one uses the old-fashioned scythe to cut grass. My husband had one and I kept away from that thing I could never learn to cut with it, I know my dad in his day plowed a whole field with a scythe,

I had a coworker who would scythe her fields.

I may pass that along. What do you have in your wheel barrow. I have lemon grass, red basil and thyme. The thyme is really loving it.

@GardenGerty I have chives and creeping thyme, a bit of parsley and there's some oregano popping up in there too.

@CarolDM I have an old (190's?) hot water heater full of herbs as well. It was one my dad cut open. They used to be cast iron and really heavy.

I bought this one used. When I discovered it had rusted through, I decided to plant in it this year. The ones I see now are bigger and are plastic.

@Fleura This one was old when I got it more than twenty years ago.
