The Rooster Clutch

Remember the eggs I hatched out at the end of April? Well those little buggers are big now and I am about ready to move them over to chicken coop with the adult chickens. It is looking like four of them are roosters, 1 questionable and 1 little hen. That means four chicken dinners for the freezer when they fill out! I am lucky that the hubster is eating chicken again. He had sworn it off for years because when he started working in law enforcement he was assigned to the parish jail. They were served meals while on duty and got the same thing the inmates got. Fried chicken was on the menu at least twice a week. He got sick of it. Do you like to eat chicken? What is your favorite way to cook it? This photo is one month old. The chickens are bigger now but you get the idea of how fast they have grown. Photo Credit: © 2021 Karen Gros, All rights reserved

Yes, hard to pass up a good piece of southern fried chicken! I also like to take leftovers and make chicken salad with it.

I can understand why your hubby had enough of chicken. I love chicken, oven roasted with potatoes is surely my favorite.

You would think one of these days I'd get sick of pork as much of it as we eat here, but so far...it hasn't happened.

@porwest Yes, I always take the leftovers and make chicken and dumplings. I think it is time for some. We have our first freeze of the season Friday night with four nights following with 33 in the forecast. Perfect timing!

It has been ages since I have had a rotisserie chicken. No particular reason. Might be time. Besides, it's nice to make soup out of the carcass.

@kareng Usually I make chicken noodle. But both are good, and perfect for that kind of weather.

This was always fixed the same way, fried chicken. At least he tolerates eating it again. He will even eat fried chicken again. You can cook it in so many different ways.

Would this be what one might call a "surprise dinner?"

Funny thing is those roos never made it to the freezer! Also, funny is that today I told him that two more roosters are being mean to the hens and need to go to freezer camp. Do you want to do them all at once or one at a time? He said we will start with one and see how it goes. Looks like the freezer will be getting a few roosters. I'll have to start hatching eggs again next spring if the prices don't drop!

@porwest It should get very quiet out there when that happens! I just need a nice mild day when he doesn't have a "project" going on.

@kareng Sort of like letting the rooster know the "cold, harsh reality" of his actions. Your hubby is right to send a message to the other one to clean up his act or else. lol

Why is one questionable? Fried chicken is the best for me. The second would be roasted chicken.

I need to move mine now too. But first I need to get leg bands on them so I can tell the younger ones from the older ones.

I haven't banded any of the chickens. So far I am keeping them pretty straight and I have two coops so that helps too. I need to think of a way to get the man to build one more coop..haha.

@kareng I will be adding mystic marans to mystic marans sooooo. They all are black. I have 2 of the suncast storage sheds. My turkeys and what I am hoping to sell are in one of those. The muscovy ducks are in the other one. They work great and are easy to put together. My layers and the khaki campbell ducks I am keeping are in the big coop that we built into the carport.

I love baked also but not going to try that with this hot weather. I love our induction oven. I don't use it much because it is heavy and hard for me to wash. Hubby has taken over that job so we are good!

@DocAndersen Does your chicken come out crispy in the air fryer? I tired one time and the chicken didn't brown -- it just didn't seem to work.
