Excitement at the Market

I needed a few things for dinner tonight and made a quick trip to the farm store near me.
An older woman was with her daughter. We were looking at tomatoes.
I commented on the woman's dragonfly pin that she had on.
It sure looked real.
In an instant, there were screams and flailing arms all around me.
The dragonfly flew away.
I started laughing. These people were clearly upset about it and seemed to get more upset that I was laughing at their misfortune.
Yep. It made me laugh even harder.
I finally walked to another part of the store to avoid insulting them further but secretly watched them fluster and check and recheck for anything on their persons until they left the store. I laughed in the truck on the way home. I'm still laughing as I write this.
Was it a bad thing to laugh?
Have you ever laughed at an inappropriate time?

@rebelann
It was a rather large but beautiful dragonfly.
I don't have a lot of mosquitoes here but there sure are a lot of dragonflies.

Dragonflies must strike some as scary.
I'm like you. I see a dragonfly and I know it's hunting mosquitoes and gnats.

I tried. I really did.
If they hadn't reacted so hilariously, it might have been different but once they started flapping and screaming, I swear that I heard Benny Hill music playing lol.

I wonder if she's at home thinking about "that jerk" that was laughing at her at the Farm Store...

I live in the middle of nowhere and the Farm Store is partly open air. It's pretty common to see insects flying around.
That's why it struck me as so hilarious.
That and the screams and flailing arms lol.

I suppose.
It's just that we live in a rural area and the Farm Store is partly outdoors. It's no surprise when things fly in. Usually.

I just didn't expect that reaction. I thought she'd brush it away and we'd all chuckle.
I was hilariously wrong.

It's hard to stop laughing once you start and when they gave me a dirty look, it got even funnier.

I know I have. Sometimes I'll bite my tongue so I don't laugh when I shouldn't.

The kids in my neighborhood used to call dragonflies "darning needles." We were told by the older kids that they would sew up our mouths! We used to shriek when one came near us. Maybe they had a similar experience, who knows?

@Vikingswest1 I ran from dragonflies for years...lol They do look like they have a long stinger on them too. It's too bad they have such a bad reputation for some people when they're such a useful insect.

I would spend days as a kid, watching as they emerged from the water and crawled up on weeds.
In a very short time they would discard their former shell and transform into winged creatures.
I'm glad my childhood was filled with those kind of memories of dragonflies.

That's funny. We called them Sewing Beetles before they transformed into dragonflies.
I have never heard a tale where a dragonfly was anything but good.
I guess it sure would be scary if that's a tale they've heard.

Hahah
I kind of knew it was real before I said anything.
I really thought she'd just brush it away and we'd all chuckle about it.
Well, one of us chuckled ;)

I saw that it was real before I commented. The excitement that followed was hilarious.

One thing that can creep people out are insects. I can see why she screamed! Hey at least it wasn't a wasp. Now that would be something to really scream about

I know how insects can strike fear in some people. In fact, I just witnessed it the other day lol
I'll be the first one to run from a wasp or hornet but a dragonfly?
It could stay on my shirt all day if it wanted to.
