Learning New Things in Life

Hello everyone! I have not been here for 2 days I think. Since Thursday, I started a new part time job as what I have mentioned last time in my discussion. I had to learn waking up at 6 in the morning again. At first it was hard but I am doing well. My new job is fine and it is not hard at all as I don’t have to carry her. I am just like a companion for a few hours. I like taking care of the old lady. Sad, to say that she is not fond of reading a book or at least listening to a story from a book which I would gladly read for her. The first day, the time was flying fast as I had a lot of things to do and organising the things of the old lady. Today, I was already looking for something to do to kill the time while being with her. I was glad I cooked for her lunch which is the heavy meal of her day. I will be cooking a lot of German food while working for her. Sometimes, I feel pity that she has to live alone. Well, the telephone is near her in case of emergency. Thinking about it, I could say that my parents were lucky to have me and my siblings as they were not alone at home in their late years of living. Anyway, I have learned something new today. As what I have heard somewhere, „A mother can take care of 10 children but not all 10 children can take care of their mother.“ There‘s trouble in most cases whose to take care of an old parent. Thank you for reading. Have a nice weekend. The photo is the first food I cook for my new job.

A sad plight for the elderly in Western or European countries. Not in our culture though. We take care of our parents no matter what. A sibling would even sacrifice his or her own just to care for the beloved parents. Glad you are there to help the old mother. Caring for the elderly is included in the fourth commandment. And of course that's the only commandment with a promise - longevity!

That’s true @eileenleyva. Gladfully, it is not like that in our Filipino families. She is the mother of my husbands long time friend who became my friend, too. Wow! I have not heard about this promise of longevity. Thanks for the heads up. Have a lovely weekend.

@thelme55 Respect and care for the elderly falls under the 'Honor thy father and thy mother.' The promise of long life is for all those who obey this commandment. Notice that this is commandment follows the commandments about God. The first four commandments are stated in the positive. All the rest are in the negative 'Thou shalt not.....' My daughter's home for this supposedly restful Sunday but we have to buy a pair of Skechers later. Thanks for the good wishes. Likewise!

It's also not easy to take care of the elders. We can scold children, but we can't scold the elders. That would be seen as disobedient and rude, even if that person is not your parent.

Yes, in our Asian culture, it is not easy to be rude to our elders especially if they are our parents. We are brought up that way. Thank you @prinzcy.

I am glad you are adjusting well to this new job. I have conversed with someone recently on how Americans treat their elderly. Here in the US it's more likely we will put our elderly in a home. I think that is changing now though.

It is the same here in Germany @ScribbledAdNaseum. Most of the elderly are put in homes. This lady I am taking care of is waiting for a place in the home for the aged. It has a long waiting list as I have heard. Thank you.

Good that you seem to adapt well and in the groove to take care of her. What you say at the end is so true. Times have changed in Asia too. Most elderly are alone far away from their children too. And many die alone as the pandemic has curtailed travel that we took for granted.

@thelme55 Thank you. Wish you a good weekend too. We did whatever we could do to our parents. We three brothers took turns to look after them. My mother passed away last year, and almost bedridden for the last five years of her life. I took jobs that made it possible to take leave when needed and I did not mind earning less.

@Shiva49 You are welcome. Thank you. That was what my siblings and I did to our parents. As my sister and I are living in Europe, we helped financially and the remaining brothers and sisters in my home country scheduled their turns. While I was there for a few months,I took care of my elderly father. Sad to say that I have not done it with my mother as I couldn’t leave my small son for months in Germany.

It seems I am born to be a caregiver . She is the 3rd elderly I have taken care of in my life besides my father. I hear that it has changed in my home country Philippines, too. I pity those elderly who are alone and I think sometimes that the home for the aged are better for them to be well taken care of than just staying alone at home. Thank you @Shiva49. Have a nice weekend.

Yes, I am comfortable with this job. I heard this statement from the son of the lady I am taking care of. He is a teacher and very busy and so he thought of asking my husband if we know someone who can come to take care of her mother. I suggested myself. Thank you @kareng.

I am glad you are there to pay care and attention to her. I just don't really have a lot of patience with people at this point in my life. It would have to be a mostly self sufficient person I really liked to do something like what you are doing.

Yes, I am @rebelann. I would not have suggested to have that job if I was not comfortable doing it. It was delicious. That was the first time I made asparagus with ham, which I was instructed how to do it by the lady’s son, who is our friend. It made me hungry while cooking. Thank you and have a nice day.

If one lives long enough most will eventually require assistance from someone. Your assisting this lady will be a blessing for her. When we reach an age where we need to depend on others, it's important to have someone. You are filling an important need for her.

I agree with you @dgobucks226. It is indeed very important to have someone dear and whom we can trust to take care of us when we reach the time when we get old and depending others to live. Thank you and have a nice day.

Yes it's sad that children these days don't care much about their parents. We daily read story of old parents being left alone or abandoned by their kids. One of my relative also did like this. He left her mother in an old age home as he was not willing to keep her at his home.

The lady is very lucky to have you to care for her. It's much better for old people to remain in their own homes if at all possible and you are enabling her to do that. Well done.

Thank you very much @jaboUK. I know the lady doesn’t like to live in a home for the aged. She is lucky for the moment that there is no room free yet for her to live in there. She is on the waiting list for now. I hope you are doing fine. Have a wonderful weekend.
