As myLotters seem to be enjoying the photos from our weekend at a Riding for the Disabled event in Collie, Western Australia, I thought I’d share some more. These four horses all did a sterling job on the weekend. The riders covered a wide range of ages and abilities and weren’t just confined to children.
The horse in the top left is a very unusual colour. The second day was open for anyone and this horse competed very well in both the games and the jumping competition. It would be called a ‘strawberry roan’ which is a mix of brown and white hairs.
Lower left is Pistol, a palomino, which was very gentle when being led with a handicapped rider but more energetic if the rider was more able.
Top right is Malachi which won ‘onlookers’ favourite’. He is a real weight-carrier and would look good in a plough. He is a Percheron/Waler. Percherons are a draught breed bred for haulage and farm work and Walers are Australia’s own breed, taking their name from New South Wales.
Lower right is a tired, or maybe just bored, horse standing quietly with his diminutive rider. It is an ‘off-the-track’ horse and has had a career change from racing to providing therapy.

@JudyEv I suspected as much. You and Vince look at different things when you take photos. You look more for the "human" side of things. Vince looks more at the "technical" side of things.
You both take nice photos, though.

@DaddyEvil You're probably right although I've never really thought about it. Certainly he takes a lot more trouble with his snaps.

It looks like a fun day. I have seen many movies with people having horses and loving them. I think they are beautiful but I am more of a cat and dog and dolphin person. Is it in the blood that people love horses or what? For the life of me I have never been one.

@Hannihar Certainly many people whose parents had horses grow up to be riders.. I guess they are used to them from a very young age and are not frightened by their size. But some in the same circumstances never show any interest. Then you have others who just love horses from a young age and do whatever they can to become involved with them. So it's hard to say but certainly being involved with horses does seem to run in some families.

You loved to ride horses so would you say it is in your blood? I am curious how one can be so attached to them and I really do not feel anything for them. I will watch the movies and be sad if something happens but when something would happen to a dog or cat I would cry or be very sad. I am just curious. I never grew up around horses could that be that those that grew up around them love them?

@DocAndersen I can just see us with a saucepan between us. If it had been a decent leak, it might have come to that as we had nowhere else to sleep. Only in the car but that would have been very uncomfortable.

Pistol would be the youngest of these horses which would make a bit of a difference. I'm glad you liked the photos.

Pistol is a very creamy palomino. The darker ones are probably more striking.
