Kidding season has begun for my sister and nephew

After attending the horse endurance ride, we stayed with my sister for three nights. She and her son raise goats and we were there to see the first of the new kids being born. These twins are only a few hours old but are strong and healthy. They are under an infra-red light to make sure they stay warm. A single was born the same day and since then another three have been born. They have around 50+ goats to kid and many will have twins or triplets so the goat population on their place will increase dramatically. Aren’t they cute?

Yes, they are adorable. Are goats used as food?

It's not a common food here but Eastern Europeans like to eat goat. These will be sold as milkers or pets.

Oh, I see. I have hispanic neighbors to the back of my property who raise a couple goats periodically then they use them as food. I haven't seen any milkers though.

@rebelann I guess it's mostly a cultural thing - whether people eat goat or not.

Yes, they are very cute and no, I won't show this pic to Pretty. I don't want to raise goats in our back yard.

@JudyEv We probably could but Pretty would probably want to keep them in the house and I'd really rather not.

@JudyEv Here in this state you need to have 5 acres to have farm animals. Anybody who had a goat here would probably get a letter from the board. It is pretty silly, because all the lots here are one acre plus..it isn't like you are on top of your neighbors.

Goats make great pets. Most of the bucks will be neutered and sold as pets.

They are beautiful, they are also useful, the goats give milk, they make delicious cheese, and also eat all the weeds in the yards.

That's very true. These are Nigerian dwarves and, for their size, they give a lot of milk.

Very few Australians eat goat. These will be sold as pets or as milkers. The best of them will be kept in the breeding herd.
