Are we putting our heads in the sand

I am enjoying the Olympics, it is impressive, enjoyable and inspiring to watch these young men and women showing us what can be achieved with effort , determination and courage.
Of course it is competitive as well but such good sportsmenship is admirable, there is a lovely spirit among the competitors whether they win or lose. In fact it doesn't even seem so much like win or lose. they appear to enjoy sharing an experience together.
For many of us these weeks have been an opportunity to focus our minds on the good and the best - until the Games end and the TV news is turned on
.
Then we see a very different world where a virus is pandemic, hospitals are full. The world is getting hotter, wild fires are breaking out in even the most unpredictable places. It is not much of an exaggeration to use the words 'death and destruction' to describe so much that is happening this year.
I am reminded of the story that Nero fiddled while Rome burned. I can feel some uneasiness about enjoying the moment by ignoring the reality of what is happening around us. Are we putting our heads in the sand?

I would call it making the best of things although I understand those who disagree. I thought the ratings for the Olympics would be great, but maybe Covid is why they aren't. I absolutely love watching the games, and enjoy seeing people rooting each other on.

For while they can have that effect. Bur they also prevent a challenge to do better ourselves and to push ourselves harder to achieve our goals.

Bad fires here too and heatwaves just about normal.
Infection rate very high but the seeing the Olympics can take you mind off what is going on at least for a while.

In a heatwave there is little else to do but sit still somewhere out of the sun and watch the TV.

I agree with you that the competitors have shown a huge amount of compassion and sportsmanship whether they win or lose. As for putting our heads in the sand, perhaps you are right.

If our heads were in the sand during the Olympics then the fires that are around the world have caused us to lift them out very quickly.

I believe it is good to have a distraction like the Olympics to watch and get away from what is going on in the world. It is nice to get away from all that for a time being.

It is, and if you are a particularly sensitive soul then it is absolutely necessary to get away from all the bad news for a time.

As we all do Carol. There is a limit to how much we can absorb. It is unnatural to be overwhelmed with worldwide disasters week by week.

Socrates said "the mean is good." Jung also spoke of balance. I think it's mentally healthy to allow ourselves to escape into the world of beauty and cooperation for awhile (I was a competitive team athlete in my youth, but right now, music dominates) and then return to a troubling world and try to figure out what we can do about it.

You have your music, there is no better escape for the mind than to listen to music that we are told calms the wild beast.
