Do you think I have enough silverware?

In the process of cleaning the kitchen and this has been on my mind for a few days. I grabbed all the silverware in it's various places and dumped it into a sink full of hot, hot water, dish soap, baking soda and vinegar.
It's now all put away. I filled the silverware drawer with the cutlery I like (Aka none of the green handled stuff that gets stuck in the dishwasher basket) and put the rest of it back in it's bucket / spare colander.
Why am I keeping it? Sentimentality and we do use it.
How many sets of cutlery / silverware do you have?

I have been giving away from pots and dishes to cuttlery to my daughter, grandaughter and Dixie. I am trying to keep only what I use, if possible. Way before the covid began, I only invited up to 2 couples for dinner at the same time. I wanted to have fun with them instead od slaving over food and washing. Before the pandemia I only gave a big party each year and it was for my birthday. If I ever give a big party again, I can ask them to lend me what I gave away.

My family has almost always bought throw away plates, bowls and silverware when hosting. This way the only dishes needing to be cleaned are the ones used to prepare food in.
I do need to go through and get rid of some kitchen gadgets I never use.

It's curious to me how people collect so much silverware. The set they are given as a wedding gift, the set they buy themselves, the set they inherit from family..
Here I have my mother's set, my great grandmother's set, my grandmother's set, a set that was bought... We got rid of one set that I particularly liked with wooden handles.

@LadyDuck I don't think I have ever put real silver in my mouth. Perhaps once when visiting a friend's grandmother. Her husband was a higher up for IBM.
My grandparents wedding china is displayed in the hutch here. I believe there is expensive silverware behind it or else hidden somewhere else.

@ScribbledAdNauseum I like stainless steel, this is my favorite and all those I bought are stainless steel.
I told my niece to get my Mom China, I have too many things in my home.

It's amazing to me how everyone around the world seems to have extra cutlery. I suppose we inherit them when family passes away.

@thelme55 Didn't you tell me once that you worked as a caterer for a while?

@ScribbledAdNauseum At first, we got a 6 persons cutlery set for our wedding as a gift. Then I bought 12 persons cutleries with other needed things like serving spoons for a communion event for my son years later. That’s how I got my cutleries.

That's a LOT of silverware! We always use a ton of silverware...and there's just two of us.

What do you go through mostly? For us it's spoons and forks. I've started using case / butter knives more frequently, but otherwise we're constantly having to pull spoons and forks from my extras to tide us over until we can run the dishwasher.

@LindaOHio lots of ice cream eaten here (not by myself) and then we use forks for our dinners.

Good on you. That is quite a sink of cutlery. I have the stuff I use every day and then I have a good set from my grandma :-)

I am just glad to be nearly done with the kitchen. I've tackled everything but the fridge which will be piece by piece for me.
Some of these could really be tossed because they have things like chocolate stains that still haven't come off after so many washes.

@FayeHazel Some do have sentimental value, but honesty I have other things that hold more value. I am downsizing as much as I can.

@ScribbledAdNauseum If it holds sentimental value no reason you can't keep it :-)

I probably have that much, and I have thinned out and given away quite a bit over the years. The ones with the plastic handles, the built up handles, are good for people who have mobility and grasp issues. I have a cutlery drawer and I have a cutlery caddy on the table.

I can see where that would beneficial for them. Out of all of the sets we have, the green handles is what I would donate.

To me, there are a lot of silverwares and should be enough.
I also think we have more than enough silverwares at home. I still keep them because "just in case". There are lots of clutters in my home as they always fall into "just in case" category.

I have the same problem. "Just in case" creates a lot of clutter.

Most of it was inherited. We even got rid of a set and still have so much.

A good box of silverware there.
You could entertain and have a nice dinner party.
Oh I only have very few.

Oh yes, there is definitely enough for a massive dinner party. It's all cleaned and put away now. I've cleaned one counter, but am not sure what to do with some of the storage stuff. It seems a waste to donate, but I'm at a loss with what to do with it.

I only have four of each. A couple years ago, I went through this phase of buying a lot of it and then gave it all away except for what I have now. I've been thinning out everything down to the very minimal. I've become minimalistic but sometimes I see nice silverware in yard sales and have to fight the urge.

I have become more of a minimalist over the years too. I can't seem to cull my collection of comforters, but I know one day those will have to go as well.

I know we have too much, we also always need more than what is in our silverware drawer at any given moment.

@CarolDM I'm a little hesitant in case it's needed in the future. I do need to get rid of some appliances though, or start using them. We have a whole cabinet that really isn't necessary.

We use the silverware from the drawers, though I've seen some people who put their silverware on the table in a cup so it's easy to get to.

Oh yes, I have favorites throughout all the sets. Well the green handled ones annoy me more than anything. I've taken them out of our regular rotation.

I thought I had a lot of silverware, but you've got me beat. I raised a lot of kids and had foster children as well. I had a huge matching set of 24 of everything, which we actually needed as there were always some in the dishwasher. Plus I have a big set of sterling silver that was my great grandmother's, and I inherited it. Way, way too much, but the silver is sentimental.
