Glasses and self image

A decent pair of glasses can make a big difference to the way you feel about yourself. Recently the lens fell out of my favourite pair of glasses and I couldn't find it anywhere so I had to wear an old pair which I hated. I can't think why I chose them in the first place. They made me feel so unattractive but I do need them to be able to read and even see into the distance now. Yesterday a friend of mine said he had found an old pair of glasses of mine that I had left in his car and brought them round. I love them and feel my confident self again. I had forgotten about these but I always liked them. I think a trip to the opticians is in order though as I could do with an eye check..

Pretty and I will need to go in for eye exams within the next few weeks and get new glasses for each of us. I've had mine for around ten years and she's never had any but definitely needs some.

I think in this age of computers we could all use a little help. I get headaches if I spend too much time online. I did try the reading glasses you can buy in the shops but I have a specific eye problem so they didn't really work for me.

@sprite1950 I wear contacts to see in the distance so have a pair of reading glasses I have to use when wearing the contacts. My last pair of glasses aren't what I would have chosen. I let Pretty pick them out and I don't wear them except when I drive because I think they're ugly. (She claims they look good on me but I can see myself in the mirror and know better. )

@DaddyEvil I know the feeling. The glasses I was wearing made me feel like Dame Edna Everage (slight exaggeration) but I couldn't bear to look at myself in the mirror when I had them on. For anyone that doesn't know me, that is not me in the picture lol.

I have seen my ophthalmologist 2 weeks ago, no need of new glasses for me, only the usual eyes drops. George needed a new pair, he needs special progressive lenses... well they costed around $ 800, I hope that they will last a few years.

What are progressive glasses? Is that the same as varifocal? I have those and they are expensive although I don't pay that much.

@LadyDuck Like me. I have amblyopia in one eye and can't see properly out of that one but the other was good until I aged and that has to be corrected with both near and far distance. The other is just a balance lens.

@sprite1950 Yes, progressive and varifocal are the same and he needs a difficult correction because his eyes are very different one from another. Basic progressive lens are less expensive, they start at a price of about $ 180.

@sprite1950 I did the same mistake too and regretted afterwards. Now, I take a lot of time to choose my glasses as they are a long time investment

They do if they are the right frame for your face. I've bought some awful ones in my time. I can't imagine what I was thinking

Glasses have become a fashion statement, which isn't a bad thing unless that means that the price rises even more. I wear glasses usually but at present I am between cataract operations and my old glasses don't work for me. i have to get new ones. It took several weeks for me to get used to seeing my reflection in the mirror without glasses.

Yes I know what you mean about getting used to yourself without glasses because I actually prefer myself with. I almost use them to hide behind my true appearance.

The picture of your glasses look just like mine and I don’t like them either. I liked my old ones but I broke the frame. I want to get some new ones.

That's just a random picture I put up. I lost the glass from my favourite pair and then had to wear a pair I hated until my friend found an old pair in his car. I think I need a new prescription so I should go to the optician.

@RubyHawk Yes isn't weird! I look at mine and think how awful they look. I don't know what I was thinking!

@sprite1950 I don't know why I thought I liked my glasses in the first place.

I was so excited to get new glasses, right before the pandemic. I needed them so badly. So then, we went on lockdown. And one of the tiny screws that hold on the side pieces disappeared from one side and I couldn't get in for an appointment as no one was seeing anyone here. So I got inventive. I used a round toothpick, and put it through the place where the tiny screw was, and cut off the extra. This worked so well I nearly forgot about it. You couldn't see the little piece of toothpick. I have one of those frustrating glasses repair kits with the tiny screwdriver and screws inside. And of course, none of the screws were the right size. So I was glad I came up with the toothpick fix.

I did exactly the same thing but used cotton and tied it together. I didn't do it tight enough and the glass fell out and I never found it! They were my favourite glasses too. I bought a repair kit but never got round to using it.

@sprite1950 It's sort of an endless dilemma anyway. Can't see well, we wear glasses. Buy a repair kit. Everything in it is teeny tiny, and you can't see well because you don't have your glasses. You need your glasses to fix your glasses...good grief. Anyway, I am glad you did it, too. Bummer that the glass fell out though. One of my friends fixed hers temporarily with a twist tie from a loaf of bread until she could get hers fixed. Sometimes you do what you gotta do!

@MarieCoyle I should really make an appointment with the optician. I've got kind of lazy since the pandemic started.

Since you are in need of an eye check up you should go have your eyes checked out.

Yes over lockdown I let it slide and now there is a huge waiting list to get an appointment but I am going to as sight is precious.

It wouldn't hurt to get an eye check. The last time I went I had to have my prescription changed as my eyes had got worse.
