I have spent a little time ...... yes, I do mean a little, Roscoe is a handful ..... looking at different dog breeds to see which ones might have a mane.
So far the only canines I've seen with a mane similar to Roscoes is either a wolf or coyote. I think I will need to get a DNA test done one day.
@sallypup you're the one who got me thinking of DNA testing, thanks.
Ok, nough bout that, time for some giggles, do you have magpies where you live? I've always liked those cartoons about magpies but I've never seen any here.
These extremely intelligent magpies like to goof around every now and then, like this one who grabbed ahold of a hanging towel and dangled upside down from i...

So far from the few I have checked it would cost between $59 for the cheap site or well over $100 for the site that gives the best test. I have checked and read a few articles about it and they do not recommend the cheap DNA tests because they are not reliable.

Thanks for mentioning me. I am totally curious about your adorable pooch. Is he wire haired or soft to the touch? I have never seen a pooch who looks like him. He is one grand looking boy. I wish you luck with his learning to work with you. Oh- forgot about the magpies. Tons and tons of magpies here. Weird but true: magpies here on the east side of WA state. None on the west side. Blue jays over there instead. They are noisy and steal eggs and anything meat wise and of course love road kill.

You're welcome.
It's more or less a GSD coat but it repels water pretty good and he doesn't shed a lot.
They just seem so funny, I didn't know they like road kill. Hey, I've seen mourning doves steal eggs or baby chicks, I think a lot of birds do that.

You do know that when I look for videos I have you in mind, right? Glad you liked it.
That's what scares me, I don't want some DNA weirdo to report my dog to ASPCA and have them swoop down on me and tell me I have to give them my dog because he has wolf or coyote in him, I just figure most dogs do anyway.

@rebelann i wonder if they could do that (and thank you, I look forward to your videos!!!!)
can they? i mean as far as I know the dog has to be a danger first.

@rebelann that can be a hard bad habit to train them out of. it is the natural process for dogs sometimes!

@rebelann Danny's a Shep mix, I think with Retriever or Collie. This boy loves to hunt, I try to discourage it. Here he is.

Oh my gosh - did Roscoe grow again? He looks pretty big here and that mane (I totally see it) makes him look "bigger". It would be interesting to know the results of a DNA test . . . ya could be quite surprised! We don't get magpies here (that white and black is so striking), only completely black crows.

@rebelann We've known each other for a long while now - you can call me anything you want !
Oh my - and how many months is he now (and still growing I suppose)? He sure is big and strong!
Hee hee. I actually love big dogs . . . if we ever got a dog, I'd want a big one. My husband and kids say so too. We just don't have much room here. I know it takes a lot of energy . . . but at the same time I know you have a lot of experience with furry critters, so that's a big plus.

Oh good, I feel the same way.
He's 9 months old but will be 10 months on the 7th of November. Thanks for the vote of confidence but I'm realizing that although I know quite a bit about German Shepherd/Lab mixes I've never before had a German Shepherd/terrier mix and boy is that a totally different kinda mix. He seems to have gotten more of the terrier characteristics than German Shepherd.
How're thing going there, I just saw on the news that they're now worried about flash flooding. I swear, CA is really getting hit hard by Mother Nature.

Hey Smiley .... I hope you don't mind the nickname .... good to see ya.
Oh yes, this boy is at least 50 to 55 lbs, my neighbors female german shepherd weighs 60 lbs and he's almost as tall as she is but is a little leaner. He's very strong too.
Who knew I'd end up with a big dog ........ ok, it's gotta be karma, I used to pray for a big dog of my own, HA!!! So karma waits til I'm in my early 70s to give me one **slapping my forehead**

We have many birds….no magpies, although I have seen them when we’ve travelled.
Some of our large birds are bald eagles, osprey, ravens….
Crows are constant visitors as well as pigeons, blue jays the odd pheasant…. And oh, so many small birds.
Yesterday morning, hubby spotted a couple of foxes in the field across the road from our house.

He looks like he needs a good ear scratching and a belly rub. I'm not certain what influence there is in his lineage to give him that mane, though. However, here is an article about "lion" type that might interest you:
As for magpies, I think that they live in the region, but I've not seen any about. Of course, as with all bird related questions, the best ones to ask would be the cats. They are quite diligent in their study of the local bird populations.

Yes, he sure can be then after I've spent half the day following him around outside and at least a third of the time we're indoors playing I am exhausted, I feel so sorry for him cuz I'z old and he needs to play.
Needless to say I get nothing done around here.

He has a lot of terrier but I have not seen a terrier with a mane like his. In fact I can not find an image of any breed that has a mane ..... wolves and coyotes do though.
