It's Firework/Bonfire Night in the UK

November 5th commemorates the plot that Guy Fawkes hatched to burn down The Houses of Parliament in 1605. Parliament declared this day a national day of thanksgiving after he was caught and the plot was foiled. People here set off fireworks every year on this day and there is a rhyme that says ..
Remember Remember the 5th of November
Gunpowder, Treason and Plot
We see no reason why gunpowder treason
Should ever be forgot
Unfortunately the fireworks are a bad time for animals and many people think they should be banned. Some shops here are not selling them any more because people start to set them off way before firework night and they go on much longer.
What do you think of fireworks?

I wish they would do that everywhere. My dog was so scared last night although the cat was asleep and didn't even stir.

@LadyDuck That's so sad. I didn't think about wild animals because we don't have that many here but it must affect them too.

@sprite1950 Many birds die every year due to fireworks. The sudden lights in the dark sky scare them. They fly and often they do not see obstacles and get killed.

@sprite1950 I feel so sad especially for those animals without shelters. I think fireworks should have been banned in residential areas

@Nawsheen Some of the shops here are not selling them any more but people will always manage to get hold of them.

Ours seem to start too early and then go on for weeks after. My poor dog is terrified when she hears them.

I'm allergic to the smoke given off by fireworks... I end up with my eyes swollen shut for several days around the 4th of July... I'd just as soon they weren't legal here and that something would/could be done about the people who set them off all year round. (Yes, it's illegal to set them off any time except on the 4th of July but that doesn't stop people from hoarding them and setting them off all year. The police won't do anything about it, either.)

Here it's mainly now and New Year. We used to have organised displays before covid but I haven't seen many since. I would love to see them banned over here as there are many accidents through kids messing around with them and it's so frightening for pets.

@DaddyEvil LadyDuck was saying they have been banned in Switzerland. We have a few shops here that have stopped selling them.

@sprite1950 I understand... I doubt anything will ever be done about them, though.

@sprite1950 Not approving of fireworks, and not just because of the noise. I wonder what Guy Faulks would have thought about parliament now?

Yes that's a point. I think he would definitely have put a bomb under it now!

I, too, dislike when people set off fireworks early, or even days after the event. It happens at least twice a year here, during our Independence Day (4 July) and again at New Years. I love fireworks, don't get me wrong, but save them all for the exact day of the celebration, not days before and after. Like you said, it's very disturbing for animals. And even humans who have to get some sleep before work the next day!

I used to like them when the children were little. Watching their little faces as they lit up the sky.

@moffittjc We used to have a lot of organised displays here but since covid they seemed to have stopped and people are letting them off in their gardens.

@sprite1950 I've always enjoyed firework shows, and I still do, I just hate all the people who light off fireworks in the neighborhood when people are trying to sleep.

I don't like the effect they have on animals.

@CarolDM It's quiet here tonight. I expected to hear more fireworks as they seem to go on for days.

@sprite1950 Or on those of us with PTSD. I feel for the animals as well.

Yes I remember celebrating Guy Fawkes when I lived in Oxford, but back then in that area, it was just bonfires, not any fireworks that I remember. My son was a tot then.
I hate the freaking fireworks over there in my area now as they are not just fireworks but bombs. Deafening and meant to traumatize pets and people.

I hate them too. My poor dog is hiding in any corner she can squeeze herself into. People start setting them off way before the 5th and they go on for too long after.
