Another cool thing about small towns

We live out in the country and two miles from a really small town. Our pecan trees haven't dropped their pecans yet, so I was forced to buy some. I really didn't want to buy pecans from Walmart (who knows where they're from or how old!), so I went to a local grower in a very small community. On the phone, the owner said if they weren't home when I went to pick up my order, just leave the money $24 in an honor box and get the bag with my name on it. He actually was there and I asked him if anyone had ever taken their bag without paying. He said in the last several years, he only lost $4! That's just one of the reasons I love living in a small community. Although I do keep my doors locked during the day. Crime happens everywhere these days. Do you live in a small town or large city? Or something in-between? Would you trade if you could?

I live at the edge of a small city, populations 7,000, and rarely have any problems... I grew up 7 miles outside of this city and always wished to live in the city... Now, I'd love to live in the country again.

@1creekgirl Yes, I know... but I've never wanted to live in a larger city than the one we live in now. Pretty wants to go further South because Missouri winters are too cold for her. I'd rather just stay where we are but move out of the city.

Haven't you found our likes change as we age? Our kids grew up here, but always wanted to move to a larger city. Now one lives in Charlston, SC and the other in Greenville, NC, both much larger than here where they grew up.

@DaddyEvil My husband's from Arkansas and I loved the foot hills there and in Missouri. Maybe you'll get to move a little farther outside the city some day.

We live in a small town about 15 minutes from a larger city. We have 1.25 acres and love it out here. The only thing I would trade it for would be a house in the Florida Keys.

Rural area, and I really don't like it,,,but as you mentioned there are some perks like that. My homeowners insurance guy came here with his sons and did alot of trimming work and cleaned the gutters for like a hundred bucks. You never would find that kind of thing in the city.

@1creekgirl I was born in Milan (Italy), that is the second biggest Italian city. I lived there until I was 25, when we moved to Monte Carlo with my husband. Milan now is 4 times bigger than when I was young and 10 times more dangerous and unpleasant.

I grew up in the suburbs of whatever state we lived in while in the military. But we've lived here in the country for almost 40 years now and love it.

@1creekgirl I’m just beyond the city limits and it’s actually quite rural. Always leaving the door open.

@1creekgirl Although I’m on the edge of a biggish city, the way thing are leaves me surrounded by farmland and forest, yet in 15 minutes I’m right down town. I can’t believe we’ve ended up in such a silent place with the big smoke just down river.

I live in a town of about 450 residents, with no real businesses here. We have to go ten miles to see any kind of store. I like it, except when I need something fast.

Your town is even smaller than ours! I know what you mean, we have to go to a little bit bigger town 9 miles away for most things. But our little town recently got a Dollar General...hasn't everyone?...so at least we only have to drive two miles for bread and milk.

@1creekgirl I live in the city and have never lived in a small town. I prefer the city but would be nice to be able to just walk around and enjoy nature once in a while in the country. The man is very trusting that he told you to just leave the money for him to get if he was not there.

That is so nice you did business with a small business rather than a large company and you get a better product that way too. I can only imagine at fresh pecans. They don't grow here. I'm in a larger area - appx. 200,000 in this area. Not a metropolis - but a larger area. I think this is pretty good. Big enough to not be too cliquey, small enough to not be too overwhelming

I would really hate to live in a big city. Our daughter and family live in Mt Pleasant, SC which is just across the bridge from Charleston. Even though it's a suburb, the houses are way too close together for me.

I grew up on a family farm, about 10 miles from town. My Dad grew tomatoes for Campbell Soup and all of the neighbours knew this. Every year women would call around supper time to ask if they could buy some tomatoes. My Dad's rule was always the same, you come and take what you need, just please do not take the baskets that have been picked and if you need a tomato basket take it home and when you empty it just return it. He never took a dime for any of those tomatoes. Those that grew pickles would barter some of our goods for some of theirs, as my mother used to do pickles every year. It was a friendly arrangement.

I've never lived in a small town. Although I guess where I live now could be called a small town, it's really part of a much larger metropolitan area. Although we're very careful about locking doors, I'm grateful that crime is low in our area.

Crime isn't as bad here as in large cities, but we seem to have a lot for a rural area. Our house has been broken into a couple of times and we've had things stolen from outside.
