Funny: "Tell Me About Yourself"

A professional student asked me about a job interview. He bombarded me with a series of questions related to it. Then, we stopped and discussed this particular question, "Can you tell me about yourself?" In fact, I was the one who asked him about it.
Me: "Can you tell me about yourself?"
Student: "Teacher, is it fine if I do not answer this question?"
Me: "Why not?"
Student: Perhaps, I can ask a question to the interviewer.
Me: "What are you going to ask?"
Student: "Did you receive my Curriculum Vitae?"
Me:?#@#
Student: If the interviewer will say "Yes," I can just ask him or her: Then, tell me about me.
With that instant moment, I literally have a nosebleed reaction. I am just kidding. It seems he cannot get the point why an interviewer needs to ask this particular question.
Does he have a point?
Any reaction about it?

The CV or resume gives a brief explanation about your history which anyone can write for you. There are even programs here that we can plug various information into and the program rewords it in a more pleasing form and prints it out for us. That doesn't give the interviewer any information about the person's verbal skills or about their thought processes.
The interviewee will not be allowed to ask the interviewer a question like that. He won't receive the job if he does.

@DaddyEvil I totally agree with you. The interviewee needs to be nonsarcastic along the process. It is not cool to be feeling smarter than the interviewer. There are some information that need to be clarified.

I think he didn't understand the meaning of the quiz, curriculum vitae talks about your past work experience mainly, but the quiz was about explanation of his identity

@Shavkat that's it, sometimes you have to accept everything and be humble in order to get a job

@Belexhanns We can do that at first. Once we get in and being hired, that's the time you can have the say.

A couple of failed interviews will put him right and he will answer that particular question without hesitation

That is funny, but he kind of does have a point. Our CV might not tell the interviewer a lot more than our work experience, but they'll usually also have a cover letter and/or an application form that says more. When I get asked to tell someone about myself, I have no idea what they want to know. I mean, they already know the things they need to know that are relevant to the job. I could tell them about my family or my hobbies but do they really want to know that?!

At some point, he has laid down his point. I also wondered why the interviewer needs to keep on asking this question since it is all indicated in the Cover Letter and Curriculum Vitae. I only assumed that they wanted to check if the information were legit or not.

Smart student! Interviewers should start reading the CV before asking.

I see nothing wrong with the interviewer asking that question.
