To end my day, I want to share a 10-year-old girl who cannot answer any questions that I asked her. In addition, she was being pressured by her mom. All of a sudden, she cried like a baby. With this situation, I will be blamed at the end of class and receive a poor evaluation. Don't be worried about this concern because I don't care if I got one. You might be thinking I am weird. Why I did not lose my cool with this kind of student. Honestly, I am used to it and it makes me entertained. How tactful are you when dealing with a cry baby kid? Image Credit: thumbs.dreamstime.com

A teacher has to go through so many things. It teaches them people management skills to some extent.

You said it right. I had learned how to manage kids with such behaviors.

I always say that before when started to teach young learners. Now, I learned not to be stressed out despite seeing this kind of behavior right in front of me.

Why would you lose your cool with a kid who is obviously upset? Being entertained by it sounds a bit strange to me.

She does not need to be upset in the first place. The lesson was chosen by her and she did not study it before the class. I am so entertained because the mother is in rage mode while pressuring her child during the class.

One a 10 year old isn’t a baby, two crying emotions is normal for a preteen. Yeah 10 year old girls are preteens and emotional over load like being pressured can cause a child to need to break and cry tog eat frustrating out. Normal atypical behavior. My 10 year old will cry over lots of things I let her cry then I ask do you feel better? Do you want to tell me what is wrong or bothering you. That’s wha better then ignoring anyone that is showing an emotion around you.

@Shavkat regardless of culture or not not asking what is wrong and waiting for the parent to ask doesn’t solve anything because what if the parent is the problem. Do people just assume that parent might not be the cause of the reason why a child is upset?

@ShyBear88 It surely their biological parents are one of the causative factors. Or, this child is not ready to let go of being passive as what they do at schools in China.

I do think it is normal for a child at this age to cry without telling me the real cause first. I am not a bad teacher since I let her cry and when she stopped, I asked her to drink a glass of water. With respect to Chinese culture, I did not ask more about what causative factor because it will take the concern personally by her mom.

Chinese students are totally different from other students around the world. Their culture is not the same thing as ours.

I cannot fall into stress mode in dealing with this kind of situation. I would rather pretend that they are not in my class.

I'm glad I didn't deal with kids in school. I might not be able to handle the stress. What I did in school is to scare the h_ _ l out of them, saying their grades could suffer and I try to arouse their conscientious minds, they're young adulta anyway.

Perhaps she tends to be a passive student during class. If I go along with what she likes, then I am not doing the right thing for her.

You said it right. I did the best I could to teach the child. With the mom's presence, the child was so pressured and cannot think of the right answers for the random questions.
