Ouch! Just check that electric bill I keep reminding myself, I would have had to pay my heating in one lump when we were at the house - I can spread the cost over the year with this situation. But that jump from summer costs to winter can be a bit of a shock - like an icy wind coming through the door!

How cold can the weather be during winter?

Right now, it's fairly mild - about -1 C But mid winter, -10 to -20 is not unusual, feels much colder with the wind chill Some parts of the country, like Edmonton Alberta, my husband said he'd seen temperatures in the minus 40's

@ihasaquestion I’ve never experienced that - I’ve never lived that far North - but yeah - brrrrr Layers and coats made from very warm materials- goose or duck down fill is one of the warmest - hat, gloves, warm boots

@sulynsi Oh dear, - 40 seems like a real terrible cold weather to be in. How many layers of clothing do you need for that, and for the fairly mild one too?

@Shavkat I’m not really a fan but I was born here - unlike the US, there’s nowhere in Canada that doesn’t experience some level of winter cold - the south west coastal areas of BC can be pretty much perfect weather but that’s the other side of this massive country from me - 4 time zones away!!

It includes my heat as well as everything else - so I shouldn't complain - its just that switchover that hits

It's not always fun getting that bill. It hasn't been too cold here thankfully.

I always hope, maybe it won’t be too wintry this winter, but I’m always disappointed

I never thought about that, but it makes sense Heat can be pretty intense, I imagine. I wilt when the mercury goes above 26C

The hydro and gas bills, ugh!! Welcome to Winter. I'm in BC, not sure where you are but it is starting to get cold here. Hasn't gone below 0 in the past week though.

I think southern BC, near the coast, is probably the closest we have in Canada to 'Florida' - your weather is pretty close to ideal. Still, low single digits definitely require the heat being turned on. Our weather out here is a bit odd - right now its raining, yesterday, we had snow

@sulynsi today has been a strange mix of some wet snow, rain, and then sun.

I've never lived in a city where it snows. I don't like the cold. But lately I feel like it's something I should experience. I really have to spend a year or two somewhere where it snows.

I’d like a place like Prescott Arizona - not much rain, in doesn’t get as hot as lower elevations, it does get snow, but not so much as here and when it falls, it melts away pretty quickly.

Here in Central Virginia, I don't often have to use the whole house heat. I do make generous use of space heaters though, and they can run up a bill too...just not as bad as heating the whole house.

I wish we had a few provinces that swept down into warmer climates - here we have the choice of cold, colder, colder still.

It must be difficult to maintain a warm temperature, as it is maintaining a room temperature during hot days. This is the case in our area. I love the temperature this time of the year, because it's just like the standard room temperature. It's also less costly as I don't use my aircon or fan. I love the cold season here.

Cold must be relative - I’m curious how cold is it in your cold season? I couldn’t cope with extreme heat - I don’t like temperatures above 26 C

OH dear I am so sorry. It is the same here. Astronomical cost of heating here.

I’d love Arizona- little precipitation of any variety and up the mountain where it’s not as hot - no grass to cut I don’t need things perfect, just all my own way!

Thankfully it hasn't been too cold here yet but I agree that winter bills can be horribly expensive

It looks like a kind of odd weather pattern this year - if I get away with having to shovel less, I'll be happy. We try to run our heat on the lower side and just put on extra layers - that helps too.

@sulynsi Maybe 100 years ago the air was still cool, because there were many forests or trees. So different from the air in this modern era
