Beware of camels

We used to live in the small town of Ravensthorpe in the south-east of Western Australia and half an hour’s drive from the coast. Ravensthorpe had a lot of ups and downs over the years but there is now a very large nickel and cobalt mine on the outskirts and its future seems assured for the moment.
After we left, a lady bought a property there and moved in with her camels. She would give rides to tourists. This was quite a novelty at the time and, at some stage, the local authorities put up a sign warning of camels on the road. I’m not sure how necessary this was as I don’t think they ever escaped but I guess it didn’t hurt.
Have you ever had anything to do with camels?

Pretty and I rode a camel and an elephant when she was around seven years old at the zoo in Springfield. That's the only interactions we've had with anything but farm animals. It was fun and interesting.

@JudyEv Pretty loves heights... I'm not very fond of them... While we were riding the elephant, I'm almost positive I left permanent finger marks in the wood and leather saddle we were riding in/on.
Apparently, by the time we got off, I'd turned white as a sheet. The woman helping us down made me sit down until color started coming back into my face.

@wolfgirl569 Funnily enough, there was a segment on a TV show last night and a guy had adapted a milking machine to use on his camels.

@JudyEv We have a lot of alpacas too. Lot's of sheep, goats, llamas, cows, chickens and turkeys. We have a lot of wild turkey but some closer to town will raise them as watch pets. They can be really mean and protect. There is a lady that does emus and one was loose for three years. We all had fun siting the emu giving the location. She caught him last year and he hasn't been out since.

They do but I think you have to offend them in some way first. They can also kick in all directions. I would stay away from them too but only because I'm not familiar with their habits. I'm okay with sheep, cows and horses as I can 'read' them to a certain degree but camels, llamas, etc are an unknown number.

That's really cool. I've never met a camel in person. :-)

@LindaOHio How lucky is that? And they have long tongues too. Our zoo has two babies at the moment and there was some news footage of them playing. They're very cute.

way back in the day we spent a week in Afganistan. We stopped to watch a caravan go by (we were on the road). People said stay away from the Camels but my friend (who lived there) and I were smarter than the adults.
They can spit nearly 4 feet.
it was quite gross.

@DocAndersen I guess he wasn't game to spit on his driver.

@JudyEv i had to throw away my shirt. there was no way even after it was washed 4 times, to wear it. it just stunk!
4 feet was how far we were when the camel got whacked by the driver.

I once took a ride on a camel at the county fair. That is my extent of camel experiences!

They look pretty uncomfortable. They have them at fairs here, giving rides.

I've seen camels at zoo. But only from afar.

Yeah, it'll be fine if it doesn't bother them. It seems they always live in hot deserts.
