Smoked oysters from China

MyLotter Snowy (@snowy22315) was saying that, when doing her Christmas shopping, she looked for items made in the USA, her own country. We always look for Australian produce when we are shopping. Unfortunately, Australia seems to have gradually given up manufacturing and has become an importer of most goods. We grow a lot of our own produce but much of the tinned or frozen items, and even a lot of the fresh stuff, comes from countries other than Australia. There is only one Australian company selling Australian frozen vegetables. We particularly steer away from Chinese processed fruit and vegetables. I wanted a tin of smoked oysters for New Year. These were de rigeur when I was attending parties in my younger days and every now and then I buy a tin for old times’ sake. There were three different brands at three different prices. I looked at the cheapest. ‘Made in China’ so I put it back. I felt sure one of the other brands would have been produced elsewhere but no, they were all made in China. Sorry for the quality of the photo. It looked okay in the lens but I don’t have time to redo it.

I'm sure they're not everyone's cup of tea but I like them. They are certainly not @DaddyEvil's cup of tea.

Ah the oysters can be all yours. I know, sometimes it's hard to find US goods here. Lots of made in China

@FayeHazel I used to LOVE scallops and shark meat but can't have them anymore. I'm deathly allergic to all seafood.

@DaddyEvil Yeah not my thing, either. Finally, an expensive thing (along with lobster, scallops and the like) that I don't like :-D

THanks for the mention JudyEv, and bummer on the oysters. They are something we could probably get American made without too much trouble, not that I eat oysters!

@JudyEv My brother in law loves things like that, and really loved sardines. He doesn't eat them very often now though as they are what triggered his gout.

@snowy22315 I didn't know they were bad for gout. You never hear of women getting gout. I must look it up one day.

Fair enough but there are no other options here. They're tinned so should be safe enough health-wise.

My father and I would both rather have smoked oysters, than hot apple pie! How do you fix them, Judy?

@JudyEv Mom use to cook oysters(not smoked) in the water they come in, for a short while. Then, she'd add milk, onions and butter to make oyster stew. Dad and I ate them raw, with a tad bit of vinegar/salt&pepper.

@kobesbuddy Someone said oyster stew was a traditional New Year's Eve dish. I've never heard that.

@JudyEv Mom's family was from Prussia. They had German traditions and possibly, clam chowder on New Year Eve was one of them. Mom did this every Jan1st:) Dad and I ate raw oysters, nobody else would try them:)

@DocAndersen A balance would be good but we make very little in the way of manufactured goods so we're always at the mercy of other countries.

I think the more self-sufficient a country is the better. Then you're not relying on others for your goods.

@JudyEv i would argue in fairness there has to be a balance. where one country focuses on building X, and the other countries don't build X. Then each country has something they build. it reduces the risk of price gouging and things like that. I can't put a tariff on good y, because we sell good x we make to that country that makes good y!

Yes, too many things are not made in our own countries, be it Canada or Australia or even the US. I'll have to check out the tinned oysters when I go shopping later today.

@LadyDuck That is a bit of a drawback to being married. Mostly I don't bother to buy something if Vince doesn't like it. But sometimes I treat myself.

Oh, Judy... *shake my head* that's just... uhm... *sigh*... Some of my friends tried to get me to eat oysters when I was younger and wasn't allergic to seafood... I couldn't even get them close to my mouth. It doesn't matter what country produces them...

Right now most of my food on my shelves is from a USDA (United States Department of Agriculture) My sister shares what she gets with me as she hardly cooks. I doubt we would have oysters made in the USA either. Some people regard oyster stew as being the mandatory Christmas Eve. dish.

We get so much from other countries that it's all mixed up on our shelves. The 'Australian made' items would fit in one small aisle.
