Last Night Was Scary

United States

Last night my husband got an alert on his phone about a tornado warning and bad thunderstorms. I don't like thunder and lightning when it is loud and close to the house. It scares me, especially because we live in a forest community and there are plenty of trees that could fall on our house in a storm. But the scariest thing was the tornado warning. I was concerned that if there was a tornado during the middle of the night we wouldn't know about it and be dead by morning. He tried to reassure me, but it was still scary for me. I grew up in New England where we had blizzards and hurricanes. I would rather have a blizzard any day than a tornado. It is morning, and we survived without a tornado! What type of natural disasters do you have in your part of the world?

Same thing tornadoes and hurricanes, and even an earthquake. Sometimes we do get severe straight line winds here as well. We aren't that close to the coast, so the hurricanes aren't usually too severe in these parts, but they can cause massive flooding. My particular area never floods though.

@snowy22315 Well that's good that your area doesn't flood but I wouldn't like the tornadoes or hurricanes. I had to ride out a hurricane once alone with my dog and once with my dog and my 3 month old son. Now that was scary!

@snowy22315 Hopefully your dog was a comfort to you? I know mine was.

I grew up with tornados and have stood outside watching for them.

@Kouponkaren I have watched it a few times. Dont know about an F5 if they have that good. But looks to me like it is from the damage I have seen on tv. Yes it looked fairly accurate

@wolfgirl569 You are brave. After watching the movie Twister, I would never want to be anywhere near a tornado. Did you see that movie? Was it realistic?

@wolfgirl569 Wow, that is WAY too scary for me then. I would be out of there and not be able to watch a tornado. But I am not one that likes to watch any storms, including thunder and lightning. Too scary for me!

We were under a tornado warning last night too. Thank goodness the thunderstorm didn't last a long time.

@Kouponkaren We had two trees near our bedroom that we had professionally cut down because we were afraid they would fall on the house during storms. That was about ten years ago.

@LeaPea2417 I know. I was awake until the rain slowed down and the thunder and lightning stopped. I have trouble falling asleep with loud thunder and lightning. I am always worried that the tree on the side of our bedroom will fall on our house and kill us. Last year I read that it happened to a man, and ever since then, I can't fall asleep easily during rain and windstorms.

Certainly glad we don't get tornadoes here, at least not yet! Main problem for parts of the country is flooding. Glad you didn't get visited by any tornadoes

@Kouponkaren Noit yet, but with the climate change it is certainly a lot more damp!

@Ronrybs I guess that wherever one lives there is always a chance of natural disasters. We live on a ridge that is about 1,800 feet up so we don't have to worry about floods damaging our home. But at the bottom of our street, there is a creek that sometimes overflows and blocks the road so we are not able to get out of our neighborhood for 24 hours or so. Is your house in a direct flood zone?

@Ronrybs I hope you don't have any weather-related issues for the rest of the winter.

I get scared when the power goes out. I have 2 battery-operated lamps and a flashlight to be prepared.

@Spontaneo I don't mind when the power goes out. It feels like an adventure to me. The only thing that bothers me is no coffee. But last year I went and bought a coffee filter and a small camping stove so I can be prepared when it happens again.

That's good! We get hurricane watch yearly from June to end of Nov. Rain & flooding unfortunately. Very rare hailstorm in some areas.

@oahuwriter I don't know what is scarier, a hurricane watch or a tornado watch. Both of them are not fun.

I grew up in Oklahoma, live in Kansas now. Tornado alley, as well as straight line winds. I will take a tornado over a hurricane any day, as a tornado almost always is brief and then gone and it is fairly predictable. We do not get as much snow now as we used to and I favor snow over ice.

@GardenGerty Oh yes me too for sure on the snow over ice. I actually prefer snow over a bad rainstorm with thunder and lightning! I can drive in snow easier than blinding rain.

I live in Florida. So yes hurricanes are my main concern and frankly Iam sick of all these thunder storms. That scares me. Glad you are okay. You are so lucky to have your hubby with you. I have to be in fear alone with my 2 roomies in the other room together. Yes, I am jealous

We have wild fires. This summer we had to evacuate as one got too close. It was very disturbing. We took a dog and a cat with us and the rest of the animals were let free from their enclosure, so they could run if they had to. The wind changed direction in the night so at 5.30 we returned home and were very relieved to see it was intact and the animals had all stayed close to home.

@41CombedaleRoad Wow, that has to be scary also. I wouldn't like that either. I am glad you and your animals were all safe. What types of animals do you have besides the dog and the cat?

Glad you are safe and sound, Here in Florida the most terrifying are hurricanes but I have been lucky, In the four years I have lived here we have had hurricane warnings but nothing bad has happened in the area we are at,

I'm sure thankful you didn't have a tornado. My heart breaks for all those who suffered those devastating tornados recently. We've always had hurricanes here on the east coast, but over the years we've had tornados, too.

I live on the northern fringe of “Dixie Alley,” so we have our share of tornado warnings. You probably heard about what happened in the western part of Kentucky earlier this month with 77 fatalities in a tornado. And we get snow, ice, heat, drought, and the annual flood. A “nice” hodgepodge.

@FourWalls Yikes, that is a lot of natural disasters for you. I don't think I would enjoy living there. I did hear about the tornado in Kentucky. So sad. Someday I want to move to Vermont...just blizzards there and I would probably become a Snowbird and leave for warmer climates during the winter. Stay safe.

Is tornado the reason why a lot of houses in America have basements?
