Are you brave enough not to laugh at a joke?

I like to hear a good joke and once in a while I might even tell one. However being a listener is different to being a teller. I find it embarrassing if someone tells a joke that I do not find funny because I am no good at a false smile. So sometimes I chicken out and laugh even though I may not see the joke. If the joke is between myself and a friend I will ask why it was funny and then I will laugh when I see the point. Belatedly unfortunately, but better late than never. The difficult moments are when the joke is shared with a group of people and they all laugh except me! It is lonely to be the one with the poker face. I know different cultures laugh at different things, so maybe that explains why someone may not appreciate the joke. British humor is a little different from American humor I have discovered because I have a number of American friends who patiently explain the finer points of the joke to me.

I know some people are very slow to get any joke and sometimes having to explain a joke makes it not seem funny any more. Mostly, I get jokes but sometimes I might just smile and pretend I get it.

I sometimes ask my Anmerican friends but even then I don't always see the funny side of the explanation.

@41CombedaleRoad I find American humour very different to English humour. I don't really enjoy US comedy films but would go to see an English comedy any day.

It all depends on who is telling it. You can always smile and nod your head, even if you don't think the joke is funny.

If I don't find something funny, I don't laugh... I don't care whether others do or not.

I can imagine how you wouldn’t get a joke and why. Not every joke is funny, no matter what. But you’d die laughing if you heard my husband’s jokes!. Even though I know the punchline, I laugh until my tummy hurts.
