Adolphe Sax and his saxophone

I wrote recently about Adolphe Sax (1814-1894), the accident-prone instrument maker who created the saxophone. He was born in Belgium to parents who were also instrument makers. He studied performance in flute, clarinet and voice at the Royal Conservatory of Brussels. After leaving the Conservatory, Sax first made improvements to the design of the bass clarinet. He made a permanent move to Paris in 1842, and began producing valved bugles of various sizes. The composer, Hector Berlioz, was so impressed by these that he arranged one of his pieces to be played entirely on saxhorns, as they were now known. The British brass band movement adopted the saxhorn family of instruments and these valved instruments remain largely unchanged today. In 1846, Sax patented the saxophone, intended for use in orchestras and military bands. Despite the ability of the saxophone to produce technical passages easily, and loudly, if necessary, it did not become a standard orchestral instrument. However, they found favour in military bands. Poor Adolphe Sax suffered lip cancer but made a full recovery. He fought patency battles over several decades and was driving into bankruptcy three times. He died in poverty in 1894 – a sad end for a man who gave us a most wonderful instrument. The photo shows our son tackling a valved double bass, one of Sax’s successful adaptations.

What a cute photo of your son. He looks to be only about 2 or 3 there. I know nothing about horn type instruments and very little about any of the others.

Like you I know a little about a lot of things and nothing about other things, isn't that the way of most of us?

Maybe it came from playing wind instruments. I had an idea one of the famous trumpet players had lip cancer but I can't remember which one. I thought it was Louis Armstrong but can't find any facts about it.

That's a good history about the saxophone and the person who invented it. Nice picture of your son with that huge instrument.

My sons played the saxophone, clarinet, drums and other band instruments and guitar. They all loved music. They didn’t get it from me. I like music but I can’t play an instrument.

All Vin's family are very musical but his parents didn't play anything. But that would be because they never had the opportunity. I'm sure you enjoy listening to your sons when they play.

@RubyHawk The boy in the photo now plays double bass in jazz bands in Ireland although he will play less now he has landed an administrative job in music education. Until he has 9-5 type employment with a regular wage, he can't get a loan for a house.

@JudyEv Oh, Yes I loved it. Of course as they grew up they drifted away other than my son that passed away last year. He played in clubs in Atlanta and around the area. He never gave up his music.

I played a clarinet in high school marching band and concert band. I also played at my church before I moved. I used to want to learn how to play the saxophone.

What an adorable picture. It seems that so many inventors, painters, etc. end up bankrupt but their inventions and paintings then sell for millions after their deaths.
