Choose Healthier Snacks over Junk

Our supermarkets today are flooded with junk foods and come in fancy packages to attract attention, especially from children. It seems as if junk food is everywhere we look. The shelves are stocked full of candies, potato chips, cakes, donuts, and assorted baked goods. People, snacking on these junk- foods are found to be obese and consequently suffer from several health problems. These foods contain loads of grease, saturated fats, refined sugar, and white flour. Choosing healthier snacks for yourself and your family is of significant importance. You can still enjoy a quick snack and get the essential nutrition by replacing junk food with healthier alternatives. Fresh fruits, such as apples and oranges, make for excellent substitutes to candy bars. A handful of almonds can replace a bag of potato chips, baked potatoes replace French fries, and skim or low-fat milk replaces whole milk. You can also choose low-fat frozen yogurt topped with nuts and fresh fruit instead of having loads of ice cream daily. Snacking can still be fun after all while simultaneously choosing to stay healthy. Photo Credit: Pixabay

@franzav Bananas are known to be very healthy to eat. So, also home-cooked meals.

If that works for you, great. However, we also tend to over endulage as a society in general. It doesn't matter what it is. You also can buy frozen french fries, and bake them instead of fry them. You can be more aware of what you eat. If you have a craving for something, go for it. If you try to fight cravings, or force yourself to adopt a different lifestyle, you're only hurting yourself in the long run. The food mentioned above, can be dangerous. if you over do it. Just watch what you eat, and enjoy what you eat. You're much better off for it.

@Gabugs While this is true, you have to remember what's considered "healthy" is always changing. Moderoation is key. I pretty much said the same thing. However, if adults don't learn not to over endulage, how can they teach their kids? With so many diets out there, it can be frusterating to know what is, and isn't healthy.

@kaylachan You are right that we need to watch what we eat and enjoy it as well. However, one must use moderation and teach our kids to choose what we eat wisely. Cravings for junk food, have got to be monitored and it is the parents' responsibility to guide their kids by teaching them to eat healthier versions.

@Gabugs I have a friend who lives in Australia and she always complains about how expensive fruits and veggies are and how cheap junk foods in the aisle are

@sol_cee Yes, it is so in many Asian countries. But surely, one can gradually work out one's budget for long-term benefits.

People do eat too much junk food. Fruit is always a good substitute.

@JudyEv YOU are so right in your observation. Parents need to encourage their kids to eat healthy substitutes. They need to set a good example and eliminate buying junk food as much as possible.

I couldn't agree more. I have started to cut down on snacking as well, trying not to eat between meals.

Eating good food is just as tasty as eating junk food.

@jstory07 I agree wholeheartedly. But would children agree? Unless they have habitually cultivated the taste for it. Besides, it is easier for a working parent to offer kids a packet of chips than to bake a potato.
