I've worked longer than she has but she gets to retire before I do

In New Jersey teachers can retire at age 55 if they have 25 years of service with medical benefits and a full pension. You can retire after 25 years of service if you aren't yet 55 but you lose a percentage of your pension for each early year you go. I always said that I was retiring after 25 years and would take the hit on my pension. That was when I was married to someone who makes more money than I do. In theory I can retire after 4 more years of work. In reality--yeah no. I'm working for another 10 years until I'm 55. My coworker and I were talking about how we are becoming those teachers who were the "veterans" in the building that just wanted everything to stay the same until they retired. She said she is on year 19 and has 6 more years to go. I am on year 21 and have 10 more to go! That just doesn't seem fair. Oh well. My pension will be bigger anyway. My retirement account will be bigger. That is unless I find a sugar daddy. In that case I am outta there the day I turn 55!

My husband is counting down the months until he hits 62, and can retire and get his much-earned social security benifit. He's reached the point where he's burnt out, but he's worked so hard, he's not going to quit so easily.

I don't even know when SS will kick in for me. 65? 67? Don't know. I have a 403(b) retirement account (like a 401K) and I'll have savings. We shall see.

@njchicaa Retire at 55?!! How extremely reasonable. I must go on till I'm 66 - 1 more year and 11 months. I could stop work right now of course, but the monthly cheques would also stop coming.

Yeah. At 23 or 24 or whenever I took my teaching job I wasn't thinking of pensions and medical benefits. It was more about the summer vacation. I didn't make much money for most of my career but the job security, pension, and medical benefits have been worth it.

I am finally to the point where I can see retirement ahead. The magic number for me after today is 255 school days until I can retire. My magic date is 6/30/23. My missus keeps telling me I need to find a job after I retire so that I don't go stir crazy.

That doesn’t seem fair that you have to work longer to get your benefits.

If you find a sugar daddy, you won't even have to wait that long to retire.

Life isn't fair. My sister retired with a pension long before me and I'm the oldest in the family. She also retired with a full pension. She worked for the city. I worked for minimum wage in multiple fields. Enjoy your years left with a full pension.

You are SO lucky to be able to retire at 55 with a full pension and medical benefits. 10 years will be gone before you know it.
