Remembering my mother

Today would have been my mother’s birthday. She was born in 1910 and lived to be 104 ½. She always liked to add on the ‘half’. She had a hip replacement at 99. Although she was very frail towards the end of her life, she didn’t get dementia although she did suffer some memory loss from time to time. My mother was a wonderful person who worked very hard all her life. She loved gardening. When they retired from the farm to the nearby town, she often said half the plants in the town came from her garden which would have just about been the truth. Although she didn’t belong to the Red Cross, they made her an honorary life member because, year after year, she donated a great many potted plants to their yearly fund-raising stall. She would also help sell the plants and give advice to prospective buyers. She loved all animals and birds and raised many pet lambs over her lifetime. The photo shows her making friends with an alpaca. I hope she is kept busy tending gardens in Heaven. Thanks so much for @DaddyEvil for pointing out that, to US myLotters, pot plants means marijuana plants. My Mum didn't grow pot but only potted plants.

Your mother reached a very old age. I am glad that, like my mother, she did not get dementia. Memory loss is very common, I start to have some "senior moments".. I am sure she is enjoying tending the gardens in Heaven and talking to animals.

@Fleura I remember songs and poems I studied in school and I cannot remember what I did in the morning.

@LadyDuck that's just because learning new things is more stimulating than just doing the routine everyday stuff. Do something really startling in the morning and I bet you will remember it!

I've been having 'senior moments' as long as I can remember - and I don't just mean the last five minutes either

Your mother did live a long and fulfilling life Judy. It's heartwarming to know about her. She sounds just a wonderful fine lady. And I am sure that she must be busy tending gardens there in heaven. I always wish that to happen to me too when I reach there.

If she isn't in the garden, she'll be making jam or bottling/preserving peaches.

@JudyEv Remarkable lady! She really inspires. She knew well how to keep herself actively engaged in productive ways. I guess all that helped her to stay fit and live that long. My grandparents were like that. And they did live close to 100. My grandaunt will be 97 in few days and she is enjoying her life and is active throughout the day

You resemble your mother I think Judy. You've described her life as very busy and fulfilling, right up until the very end, that is remarkable.

She loved her garden. I'm going through her diaries and at 87, she was still bottling (canning) peaches and making jam. She puts me to shame.

That's a wonderful picture of your mom with the alpaca. Amazing that she lived to 104 1/2 without many aliments. I'm sure she's tending the gardens in Heaven and that they're lush and beautiful. @pot plants

She said the garden was her therapy. It kept her busy and out in the fresh air which would have all helped keep her healthy.

That’s hysterical the difference of pot plants in Australia and the US . Your mother sounds wonderful and how amazing she lived so long and has such a healthy mind still.

People who have a passion like that can live for a very long time it seems. I have had some centenarians on both sides of the family two of them (one is still alive) were very religious, and the other one was probably exceptionally good humored if she was anything like my grandfather. He lived a good long time himself rapidly closing in on 96 when he passed.

You're very welcome. I really try not to notice little errors. I just didn't want anyone to think your mom was giving away weed. You'd never make people believe you and Vince don't still have some of her "stock"! I love the photo of your mom!

@kobesbuddy At around 95, Mum suddenly cut down on sugar and fatty foods. I don't know why she bothered really. She was never fat. She was too busy to ever put on too much weight.
