Lata Mangeshkar is no more.
Who was Lata Mangeshkar? She was an Indian singer who sang mostly for films.
Those in 30's may not be very familiar with her, but those of us in 60's cannot think of our music without her.
She was an iconic figure. Her personal life too was exemplary forgiving some flaws that we all humans make. My heart goes out to her family.
The reason I am feeling the loss is because as a kid my father had night shifts. I used to stay with him during those vacations. My father used to lock me up from outside (you all will call it abuse but that was the only way to keep the child safe), and switch on the radio. Back then we did not have television sets. Her numbers would put me to sleep around 9.30 pm. I used to put the radio on full volume and sleep at my study desk so that outside nobody thought I was alone and I could not hear any unusual noise. Dad would return from the shift, lift me and put me on bed.
I was just around 6 or 7 then...she put me to sleep without her knowledge. She kept fears away from me in those nights. Feeling is closer to what one would feel for a mother. The world called her didi (older sister), I would call her Lata amma.
May your soul rest in peace and may we meet in next life so that I can tell you how kind you have been to me, and repay the debt in whatever way I can.
Here is one of her songs - those who know Hindi would understand it.

@vandana7 Your feelings and the way you describe it say the loss is personal to you, no matter whether you actually knew her or not. You have the right to grieve for her.

I wish someday I get to thank her and repay the obligation. Her songs have often given me company in my pain as if she understood what I was going through. Or may be I interpreted it like that. And at other times, their beauty pulled me out of blues too. How do we thank such people? I don't know. May god take good care of her.

You just reminded me. My parents have ever locked me in a new house as they went away to bring our things in the new house. To make matters worse, they didn't switch on the lights. I screamed and cried in the dark

@mildredtabitha but that's no way, how can they lock a child in the room that too in the dark.

@sjvg1976 I think they thought they were protecting me. They didn't want to move around with me while moving things to the new house.

One thing with musicians is that their music would live on long after they are gone. R.I.P. Lata.

I don't know if you ever felt bonding with a famous personality whom you didn't know but cried when they were no more. I rarely cry. I am selfish. Only when it is feeling of loss or hurt to me do I cry. So yes, I felt that loss today and am feeling. Desolate...even though her music is around.

@vandana7 what I feel most of the time is a sense of lose, you know that feeling that tells you they are gone forever and they would be missed in whatever field they are in.

She had a lovely voice and Bollywood songs without her are unimaginable. There were the days no movie was made without her song in the movie. There was something unique in her voice. Though her personal life was not good, she never married and had to live alone. Here is one of her songs which is one of my favorites.
Enjoy the Lyrics of the song Lag Ja Gale Se in Hindi & English from the movie Woh Kaun Thi starring Sadhana Shivdasani, Manoj Kumar and Prem Chopra.Movie: Wo...

This is extremely famous .. but there are innumerable numbers that your generation has not enjoyed. I think I grew up with this one... these songs were played on All India Radio back then. Binaca Geet Mala toppers. Nostalgia. Ironically I saw the movie only 10 years ago. LOL

@Shiva49 I agree that many songs P Susheela has rendered are very melodious. But maybe because I grew up in the north, I am more into Lata Mangeshkar's singing.
For example this classical music based song is sung very smoothly by her. The gliding of notes makes me admire her.
