Are the rabbits nocturnal or else?

February 13, 2022 1:53am CST
A week or two ago my younger daughter inquired as to whether rabbits are nighttime or in the technical words, nocturnal, and I was totally shocked that she had a confused idea about the response. My family has had bunnies for more than 5 years and I'm glad to share what I have any familiarity with rabbits’ behavior. There is a big confusion that the rabbits are nighttime or nocturnal. I have studied so many times that the rabbits are nocturnal animals. Some other reports explained that those are diurnal. Rabbits are also reported to be crepuscular, meaning that they are most active at dawn and at dusk. The correct and authentic answer is given by Jilge in 1991. Thus, while the rabbit endogenously is a nocturnally active animal, external noise or scheduled feeding during the light period can turn it to a predominantly diurnal animal. Reference: Jilge, B. 1991. The rabbit: a diurnal or a nocturnal animal? Journal of Experimental Animal Science, 34, 5-6, 170-183.

We raised rabbits for years. They're most active at dawn and dusk. (As a teenager, I hunted rabbits on our farm.)

THANK you very much my dear my-lotter friend respected DE from United States for your response “They're most active at dawn and dusk.” and your statement is confirming the study of Jilge, (1991) that the rabbit endogenously is a nocturnally active animal, external noise or scheduled feeding during the light period can turn it to a predominantly diurnal animal.   Reference: Jilge, B. 1991.
