Too Pretty to Use

For Christmas this past year my artist-daughter gave me some beautiful, hand-painted wine glasses. She knows I enjoy a glass of wine and she knows that I love her artwork. Unfortunately, I have a conundrum. I don’t want to use them, I want to put them in a place where I can see them and where they are safe. I have kept some of the tissue paper they were wrapped in because the white creates a nice background for her artistry. Everyone else received hand-painted Christmas ornaments. She knows me well enough that I suspect she is aware of the problem that she created for me. It is pretty, it is practical, but the gift is also very, very fragile. So far the solution has been simple. The only wine I have consumed since Christmas has been Glühwein. Warm, mulled wine which I usually drink from that wooden-handled mug I wrote about a few days ago. The weather is warming up, the Glühwein stash will eventually run out. When I go back to drinking chilled white wine I will have to decide. What would you do?

I think I would probably use one and leave the other on display. We eventually decided to use our lovely wedding gifts rather than leave them packed away out of sight. We enjoyed using them and only a very few ever got broken.

@SophiaMorros I don't think we have a 'set' of four or six but we have ones, threes and fives! After the first drink or three, no-one notices!

@SophiaMorros I've never had anyone comment yet - just Vince!

I would use them occassionally, because you know, use them or not, you will have to eventually, dust them (even if you have a display case) so why not use them for special occassions, and at least you know they're being used and cleaned?

They are very pretty glasses. You are an artist also, your sewing indicates your talent. If you gifted someone something that you had handmade, but they did not use and you noticed sitting on a shelf, wouldn't that raise questions in your mind? I would use the glasses, and should anything happen to one or both of them, kindly ask for a replacement.

@sophiamorros That really is a difficult dilemma to resolve. I wonder does your daughter intend them as functional or just as ornamental?

She definitely intended them as functional...it's my mother's voice in my head that is telling me not to use them. I am conflicted!!!

That is a difficulty! I would probably keep them as ornaments, I'd be too worried about them getting broken in the washing up!

That is my fear. But my daughter really wants me to use them, so rather than disappoint her that is what I will do!
