Million Dollar Ideas

Ever since my kids were young, we would play a game with ideas. We never really named the game but it became Million Dollar Ideas.
At different times, each of us came up with ideas for a new product or modification of an existing product.
After someone had an idea, everyone would discuss viability, targeted markets, multiple uses, and we would check to see if the idea had already been claimed and was already on the market.
After they moved out, we'd still play the game via texts or emails. The person with the idea will text the other two and we would chat about the idea. Most of these Million Dollar Ideas were dismissed after discussing them.
I was out today and at the top of the onlet ramp from the freeway was a woman with a shopping cart.
It was obviously all of her possessions. She held a sign asking for help. I handed her some money as I drove past.
I got to the store and did my shopping. As I shopped, I thought about how awful it would be to be living out of a shopping cart.
Dangerous. No security. Unhealthy. Vulnerable.
I mean, when homeless sleep, someone could steal everything they had in the cart, right?
No way to secure your most valuable things.
On the way home I thought of putting fiberglass panels over the metal bars on the cart and a hinged lid on top that could be locked. The basket next to the handles could be another covered, locking compartment.
Posts along the top could be extendable front and back to serve as braces for a waterproof vestibule, just large enough to sleep under.
The homeless population would gain a tiny bit of security and have a portable shelter.
I doubt they could purchase them directly but agencies advocating for the homeless might be interested.
So. Do I call the kids with this Million Dollar Idea?

it is a good idea to throw around, however there have been many proposals for portable shelters for the homeless
definitely tell your kids- however, you should bear in mind that you would have to come up with something "better" than the other proposals out there.
These 14 concepts for homeless housing range from ideas that meet immediate needs for survival to those that take a more thoughtful and long-term approach.

I am not thinking of reinventing the mousetrap.
My idea is to manufacture kits to add to an existing cart. They are plentiful and already in the hands of the homeless.
Since most carts are similar in size and design, flat panels of tin or fibreglass could be precut and mounting holes predrilled. The hinge and mounting hardware along with hasps would be included.
The small basket would be four small panels and a lid.
The extending poles could be attached front and back with clamps.
I will have to look at that link. Too late to call the kids. I'll call them tomorrow.

@Vikingswest1 like I said- it'll have to be different or "better" it's in quotation marks because there a lot of things to consider.
Go for it your idea might be a life changer for the homeless

Being out in the streets surely posts a lot of dangers. It is a scary situation.
I have been watching about bikes with trailer for sleeping and stuff.

I've seen a few of those bikes. I was just thinking of a way to modify a regular shopping cart that is already in use by homeless people.

Locking compartments on the cart and a safety chain that can lock the cart to a bench or a sign or even a tree.

@Vikingswest1 It has to be tied to something fixed I believe so it will not be taken away because it has wheels IMO

Now there's an idea that perhaps Walmart would go for.

Hahaha. I thought of those carts being stolen property. The vast majority are, I suppose lol.
Maybe by convincing them to call them donations instead of thefts, making the cost of the losses a legitimate deduction on their taxes.

I've been scratched by a cat named Tesla. Does that count?

@sol_cee
It was a stray that decided my friend's house was home.
The cat was inside a brown paper bag one day and I reached to pick up the bag. Tesla was ready for me. I never even touched the bag. It wasn't a friendly paw to discourage me, it was a... This is MY bag and you WILL NOT touch my bag... kind of clawing, with bite added for fun. I didn't touch the bag after that.

I need to put more serious thought into the idea but I think it might help vulnerable people on the street.
When I drove past that older woman today I was bothered by the thought of her pushing around her "home" every day and trying to find a safe place to shelter at night. My gosh Kandase, that must be awful tough.
Honest? I don't need the million dollars from this. I'd be happy to break even to keep costs down.

@Vikingswest1 There are quite a few kind hearted people like you out there wanting to make things better for the homeless. I saw a report where this guy used recycled fabric and made insulated jackets for those on the street.

Recently there was a story about a little girl that raised money for blankets for those in need.
There are many stories like this.
I would feel pretty good if I could make it a tiny bit safer.

That's a very interesting idea. You should call your kids.
Years ago I envisioned that people would wear an extremely thin clear body suit that could cool or heat the wearer. And tiny individual lights for a Christmas tree without cords.

I'll see if the kids have any ideas.
My guess is that my son will want to add bigger wheels and my daughter will add a retractable clothesline lol.
