Is Danger of War Receding as Putin Orders Partial Withdrawal

There is a lot of tension in Europe especially with the Russian army having amassed against Ukraine and taken positions, in Russia as well as Belarus. As per reports more than 120000 soldiers are part of this drill. The Baltic coast is also blockaded by Russian navy with advanced destroyers.
The United States has been predicting an invasion and had even said that Ukraine will be invaded on 16th February. Nothing of the sort happened and the reverse has taken place as some units from Belarus have been removed and sent back to their peace time location. They are not large in number but it is a significant pointer as to how Putin is planning to go about this entire problem.
The Russian have always been claiming that they have no plan to to invade Ukraine but if this is the case why did the Russians position such a large body of troops on the border with s 400 missile systems and now I understand that the super strategic bomber the Swan is also part of this force.
Most political observers are slightly foxed because why would Putin withdraw a portion of his soldiers back to peace station, in case he was planning a large scale in attack.
Nobody can decipher the mind of Vladimir Putin and least of all America's warnings of a imminent invasion. Everything will clear off in a few more days but Putin is wasting valuable time by delaying the invasion if he had planned one. One sincerely hopes that war can be avoided but a lot will depend on the United States which has to given assurance to Russia that their security will not be at stake.

I do not know what he has in mind. I think he was withdrawing troops and he was upset because he has been accused all the time to lie and to want to invade Ukraine. I thought until two days ago he would have not invaded, but I am no more sure now.

@madan02 - The problem with the Donbass area in Ukraine started in 2014, it is not new. It started when the Ukraine President Viktor Yanukovich, opposed to the fact that Ukraine joins NATO, quit the country and went to Moscow. Many people in Ukraine is against joining NATO.

It was to send a message to Ukraine not to join NATO and the West as well because Russia feels threatened. If you would remember Russia invaded Crimea after the pro-Russian leadership in the Ukraine was overthrown.

Partial Russian troop pullback a few days ago had raised hopes for calming down.
However, Fresh Russian proclamations of announcing Independent areas (Donestk etc ) within Ukraine and calling back more troops along Ukraine's eastern borders are now making an invasion seem highly likely.
But this is senseless behavior.
Wars might provide a temporary sense of high ground to the victors but they too suffer a lot.
Diplomacy seems to have failed somehow.

It seems to me that what Putin is doing is testing his power and testing the resolve with which the U.S. and other NATO nations will pursue sanctions. Putin is not necessarily a dummy and he knows that sanctions will not serve him any justice. It can hurt him badly. That doesn't mean he won't rattle a few sabers in the meantime, not unlike what a teenager will do just to maintain a sense of power over parental control.

@madan02 Not sure where the lost focus is. Last I heard they were still watching China's direction on Taiwan. Biden is a fool, but I will at least defend that our military and other people within the government are paying very close attention to the world stage.

Putin may have withdrawn some troops, but I also heard 7,000 more were put into place. My guess is that Putin is not certain at this point, and is keeping the troops there as a threat and may possibly attack when no one is expecting it.
