First an experience then a question
When I was growing up I lived with cats from a very young age so young infact that when my parents brought me home from the hospital they also brought home my cat his name was Happy he was a ginger tom cat and he grew up along side me till i was 10 years old and we lost him in a house fire. Story for another day.
There was me who loved on my cat , gave him breathing room , fed him took him out to the bathroom and made sure he was a spoiled cat.
Then when i was 10 years old my sister entered the world and my sister was a cats worst nightmre
She would pick up the cat mid walk , mid eating , mid sleeping etc you get the picture .
My sister would go out of her way to hunt the cat down like a hunter and her prey.
Whenever the cat would see my sister it would take off in the opposite direction ussually to hide under either my bed or my parents bed on the far side closest to the wall where my sister couldnt reach it.
My sister would hold the cat like a prisoner and the only time the cat got peace was when my sister was sleeping or my sister was out of the house for school or with my parents.
My question for all of you cat lovers out there how do i teach my 13 year old and 17 year old daughters to be more like me and not like my sister?

First and formost, you start at a young age, making sure they understand how to care for and respect animals. That's the best you can do. Make sure you show them how an animal should be treated. You should also teach disipline and patience, because animals will test both.

First and foremost I am a Step parent so teaching them at a young age was not exactly an option for me.
Thanks for that assumption that all parents enter a childs lofe at birth.
Step parents are the one who step up when the biological parent can't or won't.

Well for one thing you should have started them off before they got this age. Like really young, to teach them that cats have feelings just like we do.
A lot also depends on their own feelings toward humanity. I had 5 kids and out of all them, only one was mean to animals and people alike. I'm not really sure what made him like that. Still don't understand what causes certain nature in people. Just the luck I guess.

they have phyically only been in my life for 5 years so before you judge me how I raise my daughters first know that I am a STEP parent so I could not exactly teach them when they were young.
But thanks for that reminder

@crobyghost oh I did not mean to judge you. I am not one for that. I tried to teach mine also and like I said, it never worked with one. People are different. You do what you can and hope for the best. I'm sure you are doing your best and I commend you for taking care with your step children.

That poor cat, I had not pets as a child but always loved cats and dogs and wanted to pet them when I saw them, I think children do well with dogs but should be taught how to act with cats,
