Another project for me

We’re now living in a lifestyle village and today I went to a meeting at the clubhouse. A group of women have taken on the task of filling shoe-boxes with bits and pieces for disadvantaged kids. The parent charity is Samaritan's Purse which does a number of good works from installing wells in third world countries to establish field hospitals in times of war, natural disasters, etc. I have an idea that some myLotters are also involved with shoe-boxes. We were given a talk and slideshow about the shoe-box program. Advice was given on appropriate items. These range from clothes to toiletries, education supplies, soft toys and other playthings. I can’t sew and don’t like knitting much so I decided I could help by crocheting beanies which appear to be popular with the kids. That will give me something to do when I’m sitting in front of the television. The photo is of some beanies I crocheted for children in Nepal.

You are surely crocheting faster than I do, it would took ages to make so many. They are all pretty.

The wool is mostly 6 or 8 ply so they are quite quick to do. I try to mix the colours a bit to make them pretty. The ones I make for premature babies are 3 or 4 ply but still don't take very long as they are so small.

I support Samaritan’s Purse as well. They were on the scene to help in the devastated areas from tornadoes in Alabama last year, and they also, as you said, work world-wide to help wherever there’s a need. And, sadly, there’s plenty of need.

That's nice that you've heard of them and support them. They certainly do seem to do a lot of good works all over the place.

I remember when you crocheted al those beanies for the children in Nepal. I'm sure making more for this new charity will be greatly appreciated. Those beanies are so cute. I love to crochet too when I watch television.

I was given a lot of wool by my brother-in-law but the colours aren't really all that pretty for children's beanies. I might have to go to an op shop or two and find some better yarn.

Sorry, what’s a lifestyle village?

It is what is called a 'gated community'. There are about 130+ houses and one person living in each unit must be over 55. There is a clubhouse with swimming pool, gym, billiard room, library, mini theatre, commercial kitchen and large lounge/dining area. The gates close at 6pm but there is a code so you can get in later.

@JudyEv that’s neat. Why does one person living in each unit have to be over 55?

@sol_cee That's one of the rules set for our lifestyle village. It's designed for older people. Most but not all are now retired.

@JudyEv - Samaritan's Purse is such a worthwhile project and I know that a number of local churches also support it. I have donated a few items once in a while. I also like to crochet, but instead of crocheting beanies (which are adorable), I crochet baby blankets which I donate to various charities. One of them was raffled off by a charity last year and they raised $125. I was so proud of it! I attached a photo of two of the blankets I have crocheted and given away.

@JudyEv - Like you, I enjoy crocheting when I watch TV. I am currently out of yarn, and I was just thinking the other day that I need to order some to get started on future projects. I often use the yarn that is left over from a baby blanket to make soft winter scarves for my family and friends!

@DeborahDiane There is a Buy Nothing group in the area and I might ask there if anyone has small scraps of yarn.

Those are really lovely. And that was a great idea to raffle one. Good for you. I haven't actually heard of Samaritan's Purse before.

I don't know really but those that have been in such places say it's the first thing they put on. When I sent a heap to Nepal, the bus driver snitched one. lol

You are great Judy to do all those. I remember they gave my Mother one for cancer patients from some ladies who crocheted hats like this RIP In fact I still have it.

My church organizes shoe-box events on a monthly basis to help out those in need. I think it’s a wonderful way to help the less fortunate.

I like your beanies. They’re so cute. Our apartment complex donates food for the hungry. That is the people that live here. The office sees that it goes to the right places.
