Better get growing!

It’s almost a month since I was last here and how the world has changed since then! And not in a good way either. When Harold Macmillan was the British Prime Minister in the late 1950s and 60s, he was asked what was the greatest challenge for a statesman. Allegedly he replied: 'Events, dear boy, events'. How true is that? I’m very glad not to have to be the one making decisions. As regular readers will know I’m generally busy in the garden, but now since everything at the moment seems to be going from bad to worse it seems more important than ever. I thought I’d better get on with trying to grow some food in case escalating fuel costs and lack of agricultural production for all kinds of awful reasons combine to cause widespread food shortages! You haven't put out a garden yet, have you? Snow in my yard today. Photo is mine.

@Fleura By the way have you tried eating local honey? Many people claim it has helped with their pollen allergies.

Your vegetables grow very well. I notice that they don't even have holes in the leaves, whereas the worms almost eat up my dad's vegetables. Would you tell me how you grow your vegetables so well?

Thanks, although it isn't always as good as it looks here. Later in the season I usually have problems with caterpillars eating all my cabbages, Brussels sprouts and the like. I've tried covering them with netting but that only works as long as the plants don't grow big enough to touch the net, otherwise the butterflies just lay their eggs through the net. Mainly I just squash the eggs and pick the caterpillars off by hand when I see them. Last year I grew nasturtiums in the veg patch and I'm not sure if that helped because I didn't seem to have such a problem as usual.

@Fleura I ever used the yellow sticky paper to stick the worms. You can see a lot of worms on it but somewhat the vegetables still will be eaten up most.

Your vegies look really healthy. I'm glad we're so far away from much of the action but it's no insurance. Our fuel prices have gone up a huge amount and food is starting to follow.

You think all's well with the world and then the situation can change in an instant.

Are you planting potatoes and carrots?

Still debating that. I haven't had much luck with carrots (clay soil too heavy and wet or too dry, depending on weather). Usually I grow just a few potatoes as they are so cheap to buy anyway, but maybe I'll reconsider.

Good idea! Oil and gas are used in so many ways. Transportation of goods, for farming needs to help produce food, in clothing, home heating, and for our autos. Look what Limiting it's supply as a policy has done. Without a shift in direction inflation of goods and services will only continue. I'm hoping someone develops some common sense soon. In the meantime I'll be adding some additional crops to my garden this season.

I wish I had a bigger sunny spot for my garden. So far I haven't had a great deal of luck...too many big trees around here!

Our neighbour has a row of enormous trees along the boundary. Basically most of our garden only gets sun from March to September. So the veg. patch could only go in one place if it was going to get enough sun to make it work.
