Crocus was a mortal youth in Greek mythology who was turned into a crocus plant by the gods because they were unhappy with his love affair with the nymph, Smilax. The bulbs of the crocus flower are called corms and are edible. In Syria, they are eaten as food. The fibrous leaves that cover the flower are called tunics. There are food and nutrients stored in the roots that fuel the growth of the leaves, stems, and flowers. Saffron, traded and harvested as a flavoring for cooking, comes from the saffron crocus. It is harvested from the stigma and style of the plant. The world's current supply of saffron comes from Iran. Picure is from the internet.

I didn't realize that saffron came from a crocus.

@celticeagle Imagine calling your baby boy Crocus! Better than tulip or daffodil I suppose. But still.
