How About the Oscars (Academy Awards)?

Did you watch the Oscar ceremony last night? It was one of the best Oscar shows I have seen. I normally don't watch; but there were several awards that I was interested in seeing. I also watched the Red Carpet show and got to see a lot of interesting outfits worn by both men and women. Jessica Chastain won Best Actress for "The Eyes of Tammy Faye". Her portrayal of Tammy Faye Bakker was outstanding; and if you haven't seen the movie, I highly recommend it. "Being the Ricardos" is another movie to watch for. It's a story about Lucille Ball and Desi Arnez. I hear that it's a good movie; and it received 3 Academy Award nominations. "Dune" (the remake) received some awards. I think the original was much better. I was glad to see that "West Side Story" didn't win more than 2 Oscars. This remake didn't compare with the original. The most unexpected moment was when Will Smith walked up to the stage and punched Chris Rock for making a comment about his wife's bald head. Did you watch the Oscars last night? Were you happy with the results? Did your picks win? What did you think about Will hitting Chris Rock? Following is a short clip with some of the highlights of the Awards show, including Will Smith hitting Chris Rock: Photo Credit: Wikimedia Commons

I never watch the Oscars, but Will Smith is on all our newspapers and he was right to slam that stupid man. How can he joke about a health problem of a woman? Stupid and rude comment.

@LindaOHio - I agree that Will Smith over reacted, but I can understand his reaction. I know that my husband would have done the same.

@LadyDuck Jada's going bald. That's it, but I'm not dumb. I get some women buy into the idea that part of their beauty lies in their hair. That being said, Will could've been more diplomatic about it. He should have talked to Chris Rock after the show, or maybe after he accepted his Oscar.

Some men get very, very angry if you insult their mother or their wife - especially when the wife has a health problem.

I saw a friend of mine had put up one of those fake Facebook notifications that said “Marked safe from Will Smith,” which was the first I heard of it. I didn’t watch. I don’t know that I’ve watched the Oscars ever, not even when David Byrne of Talking Heads won one (for the soundtrack of The Last Emperor). I haven’t been to a theater to see a movie since Swimming to Cambodia in 1987 (I’ve been in refurbished theaters that are concert halls now, though….). Having read about it, however, I think it’s quite funny — in a very sad way — that these people who preach “tolerance” and “me too” and “no bullying” resort to bullying a woman over a health issue. I’m glad Smith stood up for his wife, although I think I’m in the minority holding that opinion.

@FourWalls I noticed I was a minority here in myLot, because I also think that Smith did the right thing to stand up for his wife. I am glad you agree.

I normally don't watch; but I was interested in several movies and wanted to see if Jessica Chastain would win for "The Eyes of Tammy Faye". She did and well deserved. I wish Smith could have handled it in a different way.

"This remake didn't compare with the original." I disagree 100% with that statement---having seen the original movie over 100 times and 12 stage productions I think this is easily the equal of the 1961 movie and in many cases better plus, to me, one major blunder, giving Moreno the "Somewhere" to Moreno!! Of course the whole talk is about the Smith/Rock fight--to me that 'slap' looked staged but the language Smith used and both guys denying it I guess it wasn't. :O)

That's what I am wondering. I've only seen the video once. Not sure if it was a real slap. But then again, seems he apologized during his acceptance speech so maybe it was real.

Didn't watch the whole show but I only knew of the show because of the slapping incident happening during the show. I think this scene has taken the show into the spotlight. Am not condoning violence or bullying making fun of another person will never be right. So I guess both parties learned a hard lesson about something.

@LindaOHio I just read over the news that both have apologized already. Chris apologized to Will and his wife and Will apologized to Cris and the Academy. So, I think this ends well and everybody will move on from this scandal.

@rsa101 I guess that the Academy is meeting to see if any sanctions are to be put in place for what Smith did. I think they are also considering taking away his Oscar. I think that would be rash.

@LindaOHio It does seem he is one that always just blurts out things without thinking. He seems to have a lot of prejudice and stereo typing in his series. Everybody Hates Chris. Have you watched it?

He said: Jada, I Love You. G.I. Jane 2, Can't wait to see you, alright". G.I. Jane was played by Demi Moore; and the person she played had a shaved head. Jada has a medical condition which led her to shave her head.

I haven't watched the Oscars in years, but I woke up this morning to all the chatter regarding Will Smith and Chris Rock. It was all over the news. I ended up going online and watching a full, unedited video of the incident, and I admit I was very surprised. Would have never expected anything like that to happen in a million years.

I did not watch the Oscars. When hubby told me about it at first I thought it was a rumor that Will Smith slapped Chris Rock. Turned out it was true. I hope his Oscar won't be taken away from him for what he did. The joke Chris Rock made about this wife was uncalled for but Will shouldn't have gone onstage and slapped him. It wasn't a classy move. If anything he should have just verbally confronted him during commercials or after the show.

not a good way to make a joke specially if its about your wife and for some serious health issue's but you should handle it in a calm and nice way and not infront of everybody.
