Are You Planting a Garden?

Pretty and I have spinach and lettuce growing in pots on the front porch, bell peppers sprouted in our laundry room and tomatoes planted in our flowerbed. At the end of April, we'll be able to transplant the bell peppers into a couple of the pots on the front porch, too. Our lemongrass, pampas grass and fountain grass should have all sprouted by now but none of them are showing any new shoots. I'm worried about all of them. At the end of Arpil I'll also be able to take a lot of the houseplants out into the yard after hardening them off so the sun doesn't scorch them. Spinach. Photo is mine.

Am I planting a garden? No. I couldn't have a green thumb with a bucket of paint.

Oh, that's too bad. I love plants. We have them crowding the kitchen all Winter and all over the front porch and front yard all Summer.

It seems you have a good start to this year's garden. My missus is our family gardener and will start planting when we get back from vacation.

We have a mish mosh of plants that are put together and I hope it can be called a garden . I know you have a super green thumb . . . enjoy the growth through harvest time . Our lemongrass did not survive period - normally they hang around quite well. Our houseplants just stay in the house all year round.

@DaddyEvil I should . I actually would do a dance video and hope it would go viral . Yes, one dream o' mine . Ah, it's amazing that your pampas grass has been with you all these years! At that point, the plant is like an ol' friend - it's been with you through thick and thin. I expect the cherry tree to be fuller in a month or 2, but who knows - Mother Nature is being weird. I'll bet freshly picked cherries are awesome - and your moms pies too!!

If you've got plants, then it's a garden. Thanks... Our pampas grass is 30 years old. We can't figure out why it isn't coming back this year. The two fountain grasses were new last year, so it's possible they just don't like where we planted them. *sigh* This would have been the third year for the lemongrass...

@much2say You should film the dance and post it on your YT channel. I bought the pampas grass when it was in a five inch pot. I kept it as a houseplant for years. It's the only plant I took when I started getting divorced from Pretty's mom. I have no idea about cherry trees. We had two when I grew up on the farm that had delicious cherries every year. Mom made lots of pies from them. Thanks. I hope so, too.

@xander6464 So do we. We buy three to six of them every two weeks when buying groceries. We have a dozen plants sprouted in the house. I hope that will help keep us supplied for a while.

This is the first year we've started bell pepper seedlings inside. We grew some bell peppers from seeds last year but they didn't have time to set peppers on before the cold killed them.

Our garden plants should all be up around the first week of May. We tried to find some of the ridge gourds this year but Walmart didn't have any seeds. I wanted to see how they tasted.

@MrDenata Yes, you're a lot luckier than we are in that regard. I'd love to have my entire yard nothing but fruit trees and veggies. I used to be really busy when Pretty was growing up but I still made time for plants, too. *shrug* Maybe my priorities weren't where they should have been all the time.

I envy you. We just got a newsletter from housing today. No planting or plants except on our patio (which is nearly nonexistent.)I try not to think about it. I can recall many a raging back ache after a full day of planting strawberries, pancies, and all many other things. I miss it.

That's the same flowerpot that a squirrel buried walnuts in last fall. Pretty kept digging them up an throwing them away. We didn't want another walnut tree here. Now, the squirrel keeps digging up the dirt in that flowerpot... we think he's hunting for his walnuts. We just replanted all the spinach he dug up last night.

@bunnybon7 I shifted the pots around on the front porch to see if he recognizes the pot by color or if he just remember which spot it was in. He was digging around in a pot we haven't planted anything in this morning...

Thanks. My idea of "camping" is spending time in a bad motel... I took Pretty "camping" twice when she was small. Once to the Scenic Overlook at Table Rock Lake to watch the April meteor showers and once at the Pacific Ocean so we could swim in the moonlight. Both times we had sleeping bags in the back of my Dodge Daytona Hatchback so we could watch things through the back window and nobody could bother us.

@Tina30219 We haven't been in a motel since I worked as a night clerk at a Best Western in a city not far from where we live. I worked there for ten years. Pretty was ten or eleven when we camped in the back of my Daytona.

It's odd to me that people put houseplants outside, to me the purpose of having living indoor plants is to make the indoors healthier for me and the kritters.

Well, even so, the plants I have wouldn't do well outside anyway, it's much healthier for them inside.

Unless you've filled the entire house with plants, there's little purpose in having them to make the air healthier, or so the articles I've read have said.
Bringing plants indoors can provide a number of benefits, but cleaner air isn't one of them, say experts.

We've always grown tomatoes, even though Pretty won't eat them. I like fresh ones still hot from the sun. Pretty and I have a huge yard but can't plant veggies in a garden in the back yard. The neighbor's grandkids think anything in our yard is theirs to do what they want with... So we confine ourselves to our front porch and the flowerbed in front of the house. The kids aren't brave enough to bother anything out there.

Of course I'm planting a garden. I'm a life-long gardener. I spent yesterday fixing up a garden plot that was in need (the old fence planks I used to surround it were starting to rot away). My rhubarb is showing its head, the chives are up, and the raspberries have leafed out. And I put a couple sprouty potatoes in the ground the other day.

@TheHorse Oh, nice! It's been in the 90s the last few days. It's hot enough that all my spinach has bolted, so it's no good now. A squirrel ate all the lettuce and the bell peppers we had planted. The tomatoes are blooming and the green onions look good.

@yoalldudes Spinach does well in warm-ish but not too hot temps. Normally, it thrives here for the first two months of the summer, plenty of time to get a good crop before the heat makes it bolt and taste bitter. This year, it bolted as soon as the hot weather started. It was pitiful. Check the growing zones for your country. Maybe spinach will grow well for you.
