Back in the chicken business

Years ago, my husband was raising chickens. We had enough eggs to supply our home, my parent's home, and our grown kids. Then when my parent's health started deteriorating, among other family issues, we just didn't have time to devote to farming. We gave up our little garden. We kept feeding the chickens long after they quit laying eggs. They just became pets, but when the last one died, we didn't get anymore. After a two year break, we have decided to get back into raising hens. We got six. We are going to keep it smaller than before. They were so tiny when we got them and in two weeks they have doubled in size. Their breed is Isa Brown. I am attached already. I have all six named: Abigail, Mercy, Betsy, Wheatley, Sybil, and Molly. Does anyone have any idea where I got their names?

Never once considered raising chickens, but I know a couple of people who do.

They are fun. Like other animals and people, the difference in personalities are interesting.

@gnatsmom I have heard that about them. The people behind my sister and brother in law have some and our friends who live in Sanford, FL have some as well. They are interesting.

No idea about the names. Isa Browns are very popular here too and make great pets.

@gnatsmom Thanks for the info. I'm sure your hens will lay lots of eggs for you.

I read they make great pets. I am so excited. The names came from my favorite Founding Mothers: Abigail Adams, Mercy Warren, Betsy Ross, Phyllis Wheatly, Molly Hays, and Sybil Ludington

We bought six little biddies a couple of months ago and just moved them into their "apartments", lol. Looking forward to some eggs eventually, but I promised not to name them in case we end up having to eat them.
