40 items in the 15 item line? I may lose my sainthood!

I just went to buy some basic grocery items, like Gatorade, lettuce, a frozen dinner, and wine. I had 7 items altogether. I chose the 15 items or less line. I didn't pay attention to the lady in front of me. But when the checker started ringing her up, I did. She had about 40 items, and her bill was $98.99. I don't know how to confess this, but I almost got impatient. But she was an "older" woman, and may not have noticed that she was in the wrong line. I read some tabloid headlines and marveled at how silly they are. Do you know anyone who buys those things? Do they have them in all countries? Johnny Depp and some gal with Really Straight Teeth "at war." That kind of stuff. I said nothing and left the store with Handel's Messiah playing in my ears, a faint glow around me, and a halo over my head. Do you have 15 Items or Less lines where you live? Do you still think I am destined for sainthood?

We have 10 items or less lines here. Most of the time the cashier will direct a person with more items than that to move to the correct lane. vanny is the only person who believes you're destined for sainthood... and we all know she's... sweet and innocent.

Tabloid headlines had never been so interesting before. I maintained my composure.

@TheHorse Once in a while, I'll glance through the tabloid headlines if I'm extremely bored.

We do have them and every time we are in line close to one I look over and see someone with a basket FULL of things. They either don't care, can't read or can't count!! I think it is don't care.

Yes you should get sainthood for being quiet and saying nothing. She might not have noticed.

I dont mind a few items over in those lines. I do have to say she is a saint compared to a customer I had at Walmart while I worked there. A couple had 2 carts loaded and tried to get in my line during Christmas season. At least here there is only a small counter area to set the items for those lanes. And they are fully marked too. Then he got mad when I sent him on his way

@TheHorse He tried being loud but everyone ignored him. He did go on his way. If he complained to management I never heard about it.

Yes, we do have such lines for less items and quick check out in most stores. And once I was in a similar situation like you and the gentleman ahead of me was an elderly with some difficulty in walking. He did not read the counter board and later apologized to everyone. Looking at his age and courteous behaviour, everyone waited patiently.

That's kind of how I felt yesterday. She was a "little old lady" and I didn't have to be anywhere. So I just "chilled."

Yes, we have the less than 15 items line. I remember there's one mall where only 7 items allowed. I also don't understand why some people go and line up at the lesser item line.

@TheHorse Old people.... Can't really say to them... But those who are young enough, of course the cashier shoo them off to another line directly.

We do, but I think they are 10 items or less. I do find they aren't very strict about it though. 40 was far too many though. The cashier should have pointed out the regular check out lines. I can see your halo from here! It's glowing!

Heh. It's a new day. I'd better polish up my halo. I'll never know how that situation started, though.

There’s one store chain around here that has the small items sign as “about 20 items.” You know how America’s math skills are.

Is that a "Canadian" thing? Or just the case at the store you frequent?

The cashiers here send people with more items to another line, they do not take people with more than 10 items at the so called "fast lanes". The owner of the newsstand where we go in Italy told us that those silly tabloids are those that sell better, people love to read that. They exist in every country, the famous British Sun is very popular.

Yes we have something similar, can't remember exactly the number. It is annoying when people do that and I wouldn't be surprised if the 'older lady' was just thinking she could get away with it/ it didn't apply to her (as she could then play the 'little old lady' card). Generally here we have a member of staff who circulates and would spot such offenders and direct them to the correct line.

We have 15, or 20 item lines, however, if the line is not busy the checker will come find you and your 40 item cart and ring you up anyway. Your heart is healthier for your saintly approach, that is for sure.

I read this one, and some of the responses - I had kind of a dual reaction. First, yes, it is unfortunate when people either by design or by accident don't act in a considerate way - I have to give you kudos for chilling out and not allowing it to get to you. Besides, it gave you something else to write about today The other thought was, going on a rant and demanding ones rights, making a scene, well, that makes me think of those 'Karen' videos that have proliferated over the last few years on Youtube. Whatever set the person off, whether a true or perceived insult or affront - in the end, the attention was not on the one who caused the problem, but the one who made the scene. What were those wise words from Denzel to Will? Here's another thought: “Do not give your heart to all the words that people may speak, that you may not hear your servant calling down evil upon you. For your own heart well knows even many times that you, even you, have called down evil upon others.”—Eccl. 7:21, 22. We are all thoughtless, distracted or inconsiderate at times - and as you did, best to chill and let the moment pass. No 'halo' required
