What app and software are best for illustration and design?

I've been meaning to create my own children's book and I wanted to design and illustrate it on my own. I would want to create my own design to avoid duplication and to save money from paying illustrator. Do you have any idea regarding applications or softwares that is best for illustrator who are beginners in the field?

Adobe Photoshop is the most popular graphic design software, but it is not free. You can find free alternatives that are good. One is DesignWizard, Krita is also very good for drawing and painting and GIMP is the closest to Photoshop but it's free.

@MelanthaKrasos - I agree Photoshop is expensive and the free GIMP is very similar.

It depends on what system you're using, but photoshop, is a good place to start and it's cross-platform. Most computers come with a default design app you can use.

I'm looking for the free version of Photoshop since I find it expensive. It cost more than 11k for me in Philippine peso.

I honestly haven't got the foggiest idea. I just do it the old fashioned way with pencil and paper!

I see. Someone told me I can have my sketches scanned and then edit in a graphic software.
