I Don't Like to Talk on the Phone

I don't really like to talk on the phone. My biggest issue with it is that most of the time, it is hard to get people off the phone once they start talking. I often feel like talking on the phone with someone can be a huge waste of my time.
I prefer texting or emailing because I can do either of those things at any time I choose, and I don't need to wait around for someone else to respond.
I have trouble getting certain people off the phone. Often even when I tell them I need to go now, they still just keep talking. My brother is one of these people. We talk a couple of times per month and each call lasts at least an hour. I love him and am glad he wants to keep in touch, but every call lasts well beyond when it needs to.
Now when people that are long talkers call me, I have decided to get chores done around the house. I find myself folding laundry, wiping down kitchen shelves, organizing drawers, etc. So I make good use of the time without hurting their feelings.
Do you like to talk on the phone? How do you deal with "long talkers?"

Yes that would be a challenge. Are his 40 phone calls business calls or personal calls?

I do the same thing. I get up and do some dishes while chatting. My grandma always talks for at least 2 hours. I get tired after a while. I begin to feel drained from talking so long. Once the call passes 1 hour, I start to feel drained.

@Kouponkaren I agree. Grandmothers are very special. She lives in Puerto Rico that’s why. She lives far away so the calls are always long.

It's OK. whenever I call my parents, I stay on the phone a long time with my mom, but she needs someone to talk to. I do too for that matter so I don't mind.

I'm not a big phone person. I don't even like making business calls, because I know what most people are going to say. Or, I know I'm going to waste my time on hold. Or, I know they're going to lie through their teeth. I can be a "long" talker, sometimes but it depends on the situation. If I need to talk to someone about something and it would be one hell of a text message or e-mail, then I'll reach out and we'll literally talk. but beyond that I reserve phone calls to my husband calling me for something or another (usually to tell me he's on the way home) or ordering take out. Last time I had a conversation that lasted a few minutes we were in the van, and my husband was driving. I had my phone plugged into the van so it didn't light up my screen and I was able to talk hands-free.

I don't mind talking to my husband on the phone either. But because we live together and see each other every day. our calls are short.

Back when I was young and the only means of communicating with friends was through a telephone coz we don't live near each other, I enjoyed talking on the phone. But now that there are other alternatives, I also don't like talking on the phone.

You are right in that observation. I did used to like to talk on the phone back then too. But now I prefer the other alternatives.

I never used to do that but I just can't stand sitting around or lying around all that time and just listening to someone talk away.

If I couldn't get someone off the phone, I would try hanging up in the middle of my own sentence. With luck, they will wonder what happened but won't ring back because you've already had a good chat. I'm not sure if this would work too often but it might be worth a try.

I am also one that does not really like talking on the phone either. I also prefer e-mailng to the phone. That is a hard question on how to get off the phone when someone will not stop talking.

I am the phone person while my son is the text person. The persons who call me or who l call are mostly family members. I am usually so busy during the day that l try to make my calls when l get into bed at night. If someone calls me during the day and it is a long call, l find something to do while talking.

Rightly said. I agree. I talk on phone rarely. I don't have such people luckily who goes on speaking if I have to hang up , they understand. Texting and emailing is better I guess

I’m also not comfortable talking over phone. In fact I prefer texting. If a long talker calls me, I say I have got some important work related stuff to do. Perhaps a call or something. It had worked. Either they bought it , or it’s clear to them that I’m not interested.
