When did the bathroom become washroom?

Seriously, as a child I never referred to washroom as anything other than bathroom.
Toilet was where you have the commode.
Restroom...... it was something we used rarely when using the word toilet made us feel awkward.
Loo was common word for commode.
But the last 20 odd years........ even house help has started referring to the bathroom as washroom. It is a different issue that it has the toilet in it.
And this makes me wonder why bathroom is something to be ashamed of.
I always thought having bath imports some sort of relief and royal feeling. So what is wrong with the word bath...and what is right with the word wash.
Any idea?

Nothing wrong with the word wash people use it all of the time. It’s probably more of a where you are at and how you are raise which type of words you use to tell people about things. I say bathroom al of the time some times I say restroom which is when I’m out it even then I might say bathroom or I need to use the potty toilet or I need to go pee. If my stomach is an issue I’ll say I’m having tummy trouble and will be in the bathroom.
Bathroom can also be used depending where you line as being in it to take a bath or shower. I’d your going to clean yourself lots of people saying they are going to go wash themselves leaving it up to that person to figure out if you meant taking a bath or shower. In some periods how the toilet could be in the washroom
Or bathroom but have like a wall or separate room with in the room for the toilet allowing you privacy when they are using it but allowing someone else to come in to the washroom
To either wash hands, do makeup, wash themselves (bath or shower). It’s a common feature they a lot of more modern house have but not all. Then there is half bathroom or just a sinkett (also know as a wetbar).

@Milo8855 Even we Indians used to call it that. After all toiletries include more than toilet paper. So calling it washroom seems like a cover up. Somebody does not like the word toilet...thinks of it only in relation to commode and poop. Victorian. I am going to call my washroom as bathroom or toilet...to hell with what others think. I am not ashamed of emptying my bowels everyday. I don't fart because my insides are also clean.

@vandana7 everyone farts it’s physically in possible to not fart. Actually people part so much most of the time we do notice and farting has nothing to do with your inside being clean. Husband fart most of the time in your sleep.
The use of the word just depends on you there is no right or wrong when it comes to you peeing, pooping, vomiting, farting burping, and weather you say showers or bath when it comes to bathing or washing or even cleaning yourself it’s personal choice. Just like when someone says soda, or pop, or soft drink or is a personal choice to use whatever one you feel is right for you.

@vandana7 In Italy and Switzerland we have a "full bathroom" (always more than one), that has the toilet facility in the same room where there is the shower (or the bath tub) the sink and the bidet (the bidet is always present!) In France they have the toilet facility separated from the bathroom where they have the shower/bathtub. The toilet room only has a small sink in it. I found this ridiculous, as the bidet was in the main bathroom.

It depends a lot on where you live and what you grew up with. We call it the bathroom.

With time changes the expression and we have to accept these new changes and use them. We have to go with the flow of time.

@vandana7 Haha! Now it's time you accept the modern changes as your maid has accepted it.

Maybe it has to do with the fact that many people now shower instead of bathe. Or they want to wash their hands.

Washroom is sophisticated and more of an Elitist sounding !
Plus Bathroom implies .. just bath
But combined toilet and bath = Washroom
And well we still ape a lot of Western thoughts, ideas and even bath concepts!!

I always thought it was called a wash room because there was no toilet in it. Only a basin. Then when toilets became a common thing it was called a bathroom, or restroom.

@vandana7 Washroom is probably less crude than bathroom.

Here in the Philippines. Most of us specifically with the lower class and/or even middle class like us. Bathrooms also serve with washroom or laundry room as well. Lol.
