God was rearranging the furniture

In June, it will officially be winter in Australia but our rains usually start in May as they have again this year. We have had some very wet days but this week is supposed to be cloudy but fine. I intend to do some washing today and will hang it outside. We had an incredible thunderstorm the other night with a lot of rolling, and cracking, thunder. I quite like thunder but, of course, you have to put up with the lightning that goes with it. We had friends who had children who were a bit frightened of thunder. They would tell the children that God was rearranging his furniture which I thought was a nice explanation. We would often say ‘Thor is angry’, Thor being the god of thunder. Do you have any sayings about storms? Photo is of a stormy sky over our old house.

Thunder never bothered me, lighting did. My Nana would tell me to smile, God was taking my picture. Love the rainbow.

That's a nice comment of your Nana's. It could easily reassure a small child.

My boys would race to watch the free light show when they heard thunder.

It seems there's a lot of different terms/explanation for thunder.

That is a lovely rainbow. We were NYC kids so for us they were bowling strikes up above

When I was a child (60 years ago) I actually remember thinking that God was moving heavy furniture when I heard thunder.

@JudyEv when I was that age I’d never even heard of bowling, but now as an adult, I could totally identify with that.

Thunder is okay , it is the lightning l am afraid of. It can strike and kill.

They are essentially the same thing, the thunder is just the noise that goes with the light, only it travels more slowly.

@Fleura They say to count the seconds which tells you how many miles away the lightning is.

@JudyEv - I always liked to play bocce,it is a very popular game in Italy. I can understand why you are not going to celebrate. Moving was sort of necessary, but you surely miss your place.

That's a good one. Bocce is a great game. We were very lucky to have so many years at our old place. It will be 12 months tomorrow since we moved. I won't be celebrating.

@JudyEv I love that and it certainly would have worked back in the day when I was raising my kids. They probably would have laughed and said cheese every time the lightening struck

Some sort of explanation can take away a lot of the fear. Did you read that someone said lightning was God taking a photo? I thought that was nice.

I like the 'God rearranging the furniture' one too! I love a good thunderstorm. We had some the other night as well, but only a short one. We always used to say that a British summer equalled one fine day and a thunderstorm. The past few years we've had more fine weather and fewer storms but this month we seem to be back on course!

@JudyEv yes I've never suffered a lightning strike. Although when I was little the telegraph pole across the road from our house was struck, apparently. I don't remember the event but for years afterwards the pole had a big black tarry scar down one side.

I like a good thunderstorm too but just the once we had a corker and directly overhead. I was reminded of the saying about being careful what you wish for.

@JudyEv - We used to say that "the angels are bowling" when we had thunder and lightening. When we lived in Texas, thunderstorms were common the year around. We encouraged our kids to stay inside, but not be afraid. A mailman in our community was once struck by lightening while delivering mail. It burned him, knocked him down, and cast off his shoes, but he survived and was back delivering mail after a few months!

@JudyEv - Yes, the mailman was VERY lucky to have survived that. When we lived in Texas we were told that if lightning is close enough for you to see it, then it is close enough to hit you. Kids' sporting events and things like that were always cancelled if there was visible lightning. There used to be a joke about lightening on the golf course. "If you are playing golf during a thunderstorm, grab your 3-iron. Why? Because even God can't hit a 3-iron." I know ... pretty lame joke!

Your mailman was pretty lucky. We always shelter during a thunderstorm. I know at golf they all get in out of the weather if there is thunder and lightning about.
