Farmer's Market

We wanted to go to the local Farmer's Market this morning. Their local page online says they open at 8 am and will be open until noon. (The location is given as our City Hall parking lot.)
We were hoping for locally sourced strawberries, peaches and watermelons. Some locally grown veggies of different kinds would be wonderful, too.
When we got there, you can imagine our disappointment to find the parking lot full of garbage sales instead of fruits and veggies. We don't need or want stuff nobody else wanted to keep. We're building up our own cache of that type of thing.
Do you go to a local Farmer's Market for fruits and veggies in season? What kind of things do you buy there?
Photo is our babies.

@sjvg1976 Yep. They are usually cheaper than the grocery store and, as you said, fresh.

We went on to the local grocery store and bought everything we need for the next two weeks.
Things taste better when they're locally grown.

When I think farmers market I think food and maybe homemade crafts. Not a yard sale

@jobelbojel I'd have to see it to be sure, but I think we'd call that more of a supermarket... maybe.

Is it in a building or is it different stands all grouped together and the produce is brought in each day from a farm? Our Farmer's Markets is different stands with stuff from different farms on offer and usually the farmer's wife or daughter is running the stand and collecting money for the items being sold there.

We have three farmers markets, that are true farmers markets with fruits and vegetables. There’s a few pop-up flea markets around too, but they usually operate at different sites or on different dates than the farmers markets.
My favorite things to pick up are fresh strawberries and blueberries when they are in season.

We're going to go back this Saturday and see what's there, assuming it doesn't rain this Saturday. Maybe we just hit a bad Saturday to get fruit and veggies.
I'm not sure what to call what we saw... It was set up where the Farmer's Market always was before the pandemic.

Did you mean the vendors were doing garage sales there?
We have a farmers market too but I don't go on a regular basis. They sell fruits and veggies, hands and baked goods and other foods too.

Yup. I call garage sales garbage sales because it's stuff other people throw out.
Before the pandemic, it was all fruits and veggies. Now it's just junk. We're going to go again tomorrow and if they don't have fruits and veggies, we're done.

Hello to your babies! And I don't know how I missed this post .
You'd think a Farmer's Market would be a farmer's market . We only went to 1 thus far this season . . . the one in the mall parking lot. We hadn't gone at all during the pandemic. It seems there were less fruit/veggie vendors . . . way less. There were more people selling stuff like soap, jewelry, candles, clothing, toys, caps - honestly stuff I really don't need. The kids and I used to love sampling the various fruits and such . . . but covid changed all that. Maybe we'll try a different Farmer's Market.

The babies said hello back!
Pre-pandemic Pretty and I always bought a membership with a large farm outside of Springfield. We'd pay around $100 in February or April and then drive to Springfield every Saturday and pick up boxes of veggies and fruit. It was really nice. I don't know if the farm went out of business during the pandemic. I know we didn't get the brochure from them this year.
It's easy to miss posts on myLot. Blink and posts you might be interested in are buried under stuff nobody is interested in reading, let alone commenting on. *shrug*

@DaddyEvil The babies look happy there .
Farm fresh goodies every weekend - that must've been awesome! It'd be really sad if that farm went out of biz . . . but oh I'll bet being in agriculture is most difficult these days, especially with the nutso weather patterns. I don't think our farms here have such a membership thing.
Yah, things are just kinda hit and miss here I guess .

@much2say We loved almost everything we got from them. (We don't eat okra, so gave those to the nice old couple next-door. We also gave them some of the tomatoes. We didn't eat those fast enough.)
Here in the Ozarks, we're getting plenty of rain but enough sun that the veggies we have are doing lovely. I'd find it hard to believe they aren't getting very similar weather 40 miles away from us. (We still had tomatoes blooming and setting in late November last year.)
I'd share the rain we've been getting if I could.

@crazyhorseladycx I've been having trouble with my email for six months or so. My laptop is getting old and doesn't want to play nicely with programs that aren't actually running on the laptop. (I have a brand new laptop and have set it up but I don't like Win11, so keep using my old Win8.1 machine. )
We were WAY too hot this year for most veggies to produce well. Even my spinach, green onions, tomatoes and bell peppers didn't produce well on the porch in their pots. Pretty and I kept them watered but the heat stayed above 100F most of the summer. I'm not surprised the farms around us were having problems producing veggies. (My spinach bolted as soon as it reached about two and a half weeks old. I tried planting more but it bolted even faster. The tomatoes and bell peppers both had blooms but when they tried to set fruit, the fruit shriveled and dropped off the plants, even with us watering them every morning and evening. The green onions did okay but they tasted funny, so Pretty pulled them up and threw them away.)
In August, the heat returned to "normal" here and we finally started getting loads of tomatoes and bell peppers setting and staying on the vines until harvested. But that put them right up against the frost here. We got about twenty tomatoes that ripened on the vine and I brought in fifteen more to ripen in the kitchen window. The bell peppers produced well in August but they barely had time to ripen before the first frost, as well.
We had a squirrel who was positive we were planting the red and green lettuces for his person larder. He ate more of them than we did. He looked like he gained a pound this summer from eating all the lettuce in our garden pots. (Pretty named him "Fatty". )

Hey! I was just thinking I'd need to send you an email and check on you a day or two ago! I'm happy to see you!
The people that ran the local farmer's market told me nobody had any produce for sale yet so they let the people who did have something to sell set up booths. But I think they just wanted money instead of fallowing "normal" procedures. I never did see any fruit or veggies being sold there this last year.

@paigea We saw garage (I normally call them garbage sales.) sales all over the city as we drove to the grocery store this morning. My eyes are swelling up so we wanted to get what we needed and get home before they swelled enough I couldn't drive.
I'm lying on my keyboard to see to type now. I won't be on myLot much longer today.

There used to be a guy with a truck that sold watermelons that would come by the area where hubby works. Sometimes hubby would get a watermelon there. It was really good. Can't compare to those sold in stores.
I wish I had a farmer's market near me. As far as I know there aren't any. Otherwise I'd go.

Yeah, I wish we had one now. The one that used to be on our town square doesn't have any fruits or vegetables anymore.
Last Saturday, Pretty and I went to a local orchard and I picked up a bushel of peaches and two quarts of strawberries. On our way home we saw an older gentleman parked beside the highway selling watermelons from his truck. We stopped and bought three of them from him. We ate part of one this morning for breakfast.

@lovebuglena He had both types. The round ones for $6 and the long ones for $9 each. We bought one long one and two round ones. The long one has seeds but is delicious. The round ones are supposed to be seedless. We haven't cut one of them open yet. (We don't have enough room in our fridge for two partial melons.)

We gave up on the local farmer's market. A couple of weekends ago we went to a nearby orchard and bought peaches.
We don't have room to grow fruits and I've got six bell pepper plants growing on our front porch. They have lots of flowers but aren't producing any bell peppers yet. Our tomato plants are blooming too, but no baby tomatoes yet.

I have one very local to me, but it's really tiny and doesn't have enough vendors for a variety of fruits and vegetables.Usually, we go to the town next over, they have one huge one on Tuesday afternoons and another one on Thursday afternoon and evening. There is also one on Saturday morning, but it gets wiped out so fast I rarely go to that one. Thursday I hope to go to my favorite one to get the fresh peaches they have said they would have. We love peaches.

We tried three times to get fruits and veggies at the one here but they only had hand-crafted items we aren't interested in. We finally went to an orchard six miles away to buy peaches and some veggies.
Peaches are my favorite fruit. I used to eat just peaches while they were in season but had to stop doing that a few years ago. I still eat one or two a day, but have to limit myself now.
Have you ever gotten "white" peaches? That's what we used to grow on our farm when I was a kid. Eating those peaches brings back so many memories.

@MarieCoyle When I rented my first apartment, there was an old lady who lived in the next apartment. She would bring me peach cobbler or apple pies. (She always said I was too skinny and she wanted to fatten me up. ) Her fresh baked items were always delicious, even though I'd never heard of cheddar cheese baked in apple pies before. She was so nice.

Yes, there are many varieties of peaches and the white ones are delicious. There is an apple farm close to me, they do bring in peaches from another orchard about an hour away. They say they will have them next week. I hit the fresh peaches in the summer, they are such a treat to me. I also make and freeze a few peach pies for later to share with the kids. So good.
I know what you mean about memories. Grandma's peach pies and cobblers. One of my aunts made the best peach ice cream in the world.

We have a Farmers market that is held every Saturday . I haven’t been in a while. We do stop at local veggie stands to pick up a few things.
There are flea markets that do tag sale items. Our farmers market is specific on what can be sold.you have to meet a certain criteria before they will let you open a spot.

We went back this last Saturday. It was still only the same things but not fruits, veggies or homemade foods. Our Farmer's Market was only fruits, veggies or homemade foods before the pandemic began. They've really let things slide. I left a review on Yelp. Somebody on the rules' board said they were trying to start it up again but the people selling bric-a-brac were the only ones interested in setting up stalls, so far.
We stopped at a local orchard and bought some peaches and strawberries Saturday afternoon.

I do feel your disappointment. Yes we do have local farmer's market here. Here in the Philippines, farmer's market is the easiest way to go through. It's almost nearby to each of one. Here in my area, the nearest local farmer's market is about a kilometer only. In the area of my mother, the nearest local farmer's market is half a kilometer. Imagine the distance, we can go there anytime we want.

@DaddyEvil That's a long drive. In addition to the distance of our local farmer's market, we have retail farmer's market. Retail is the owner of this will be the buying in bulk and added some pennies into it then sell it within the neighborhood. The nearest retail farmer's market in my area is about 25 meters, I think or 30 meters.

@luisga814 A kilometer is just over half a mile. It's a quarter mile from our house to the edge of our city. Half a mile is not very much here.
The people selling stuff in the local Farmer's Market must grow their own fruits and veggies. They aren't allowed to buy it elsewhere and bring it in to sell it.

@DevMrSamEleazar Yes, I've talked to Filipino friends about the markets there. It's not the same as markets here. We don't have "wet markets". We buy fish or meat at a grocery store. The fish or meat are packaged up with a price tag on them. We just pay the price plus tax for the government to waste. (The government isn't supposed to waste the taxes we pay but they do anyway. )
