All Quiet on the Western Front Trailer

This is a trailer from the 1930's version of the book directed by Lewis Milestone. It won two notable academy awards for best picture and director. I can understand why this movie would have thrilled the audience. Talkies had only been around for three years and now the sounds of a battlefield could take you directly to the action. I haven't seen the movie, but I did read the book published in 1928, written by a Erich Maria Remarque, a German veteran who wrote about the grim realities of the first world war. It is a very dark and depressing book, yet a story that needed to be told. It was the third highest grossest film in 1930. Picture is free to use from Wikimedia Commons. https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/6/6c/All_Quiet_on_the_Western_Front_%281930_film%29_poster.jpg

I have read the book many years ago, but I do not believe I ever watched the movie. The first World War was better for civilians than the second, but terrible for the troops.

@misunderstood_zombie - They told us the stories about WWI and WWII, WWII was very hard for the population in Europe, no food and spending most times in the shelters to avoid to be killed by the bombs.

@LadyDuck That's horrible. It's good they passed on their stories though. We all need to hear the horror of war.

Same here. It was a long time ago when I read the book. It was very sorrowful and I liked the aspect of reading from a soldier of the other side than we were.

@marguicha I know it's really sad. In this trailer they talk about sending the generals to fight it out and I think that's a good idea.

It was stupid in every aspect. I agree it shouldn't have ever happened.

Many years ago l was interested in war movies and l saw some great ones based on both WW1 and 2. " Bridge over the River Kwai" and "Beach head" come to mind.

Though I don't like a lot of war movies I really liked Bridge over the River Kwai. My favorite is Stalag 13, with William Holden, what a great movie.
